How long should the heavy wash cycle run? I have been using the regular cycle but decided to use the heavy duty when washing the filters from my range hood. Should it take over 2 hours?

The heavy cycle typically takes a long time because it includes a short soak and prewash. The older hot fill washers were quicker but used more water while the newer cold fill washers are claimed to use a third less water and so need to take longer over the wash.

The heating of the water also adds time to the cycle. Modern detergents work best, the manufacturers claim, with a rising temperature.

You may have a broken inner tub spider. Check for play between the inner drum and the outer tub by moving the inner drum up and down.
If there is excessive play, the spider is broken causing an unbalanced load and therefore no high speed spin can be achieved.

In this case the inner drum would need to be replaced, which means taking the machine almost completely apart. A good tech can do it in about 1.5 hours.

SOURCE: washing machine won't spin dry

If this is a top load clothes washer, almost all units will not spin if the door is open during the cycle time when it should be spinning. If the door is closed, check if the door safety interlock is broken (on most washers, you will see a pin on the door pressing into a little depression)

If these things check out, you probably have a failed transmission deep inside the clothes washer. Fixing that is non-trivial.

If I use the pre wash cycle do I need to add detergent for this cycle and then again for the regular wash cycle/

Depends on the machine but in most cases, yes a prewash requires an additional detergent to remove the heavy dirt and grime and then when it is done soaking, the regular cycle kicks in and runs

Producing debris when in spin cycle

2.13.1 Scrud
If fabric softener is used regularly it will eventually cause a build up within the outer bowl. This can
result in black flakes present in the wash load that can stain garments. To remove scrud follow the
procedure below.
Step1: Add a full cup of a good quality dishwashing powder such as Active or a similar product
into the machine.
Step 2: Set the machine to a Heavy Duty cycle, select a Hot Wash temperature, High Water level
and allow the machine to agitate for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Leaving the lid closed, turn the machine off and allow to soak overnight.
Step 4: The following day, turn the machine on and advance to the spin cycle to drain the water
from the machine. After the water has drained, turn the machine off then back on again, and select
a Heavy Duty cycle, Hot wash, High Water level, and allow the machine to complete a full cycle to
ensure that all of the loose scrud and residual detergent has been flushed away.
Note: If there is an extremely heavy build up the bowl will have to be removed for pressure washing

Washer does not allow hot water to enter machine when you press the heavy duty button. Regular warm cycle or hot works fine. Replaced the water valves, main control panel.

Hi,

This is a common question we face daily. Certain washing machines allow hot water to enter only during certain cycles. Others allow hot and cold to enter intermittently. Consult your owner's manual to be absolutely sure about this. If you're sure the machine isn't working the way it used to--or should--try these tests:
Is the hot water turned on? If not, turn it on.
Is the washer getting cold water but no hot water? If so, check to see if the control panel
settings are correct.

GWL15 no hot water on Regular or Heavy Duty Cycles

should you select a 40* wash it would not be right if the machine filled with hot water, as the water in the house tank is a lot more than 40* ( around 65* i think?) this would just damage the clothes and i am sure you would just complain again at that.

if the machine works fine then there is no problem

Kenmore Washer

I had our washer repaired several years back and the guy said it was a problem with this model and we should NEVER use any cycle but the heavy duty. The only way to reset the machine was to let the machine run through its cycle one time (stopping and starting). Once it completes - everything goes back to normal unless somebody decides to switch the wash action to something other than Fast/Fast.
