SOURCE: cannot take pictures
Sounds like you might be in luck. These symptoms sound very much like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Um...well when mine does that i unplug it and hold the power button for ten seconds and then plug it back in. Always works for me ;-) hope it works for u.

sounds like a lcd controller card. Replace it
