Install the driver of the external hard drive first before connecting it to your computer, or when an icon appears on the lower right side of your desktop, right click on it and try to repair it by using troubleshoot compatibility. Maybe, your hard drive doesn't work with windows 7. You can run it in older versions of Operating Systems even if you have windows 7 in it.

This can happen when you place a drive in multiple computers with windows. Also this can happen if the system used the drive to extract system folders.

right clickt he items and then click security. click advanced and you can go to the owner tab. under that there is a way to take ownership for the selected items and all subitems.

Iomega LPHD-UP 500GB power issue?

The fault sounds like a power supply problem. The USB port on your computer supplies up to a max. 500MA and this may not be sufficient for the external hard drive to work properly.
I suggest you get a new AC power adapter for this drive.
