How come there is always a cold breeze coming down the chimney flue in the winter?

The answer is simple: the flue is left open so allow smoke to come out of the fireplace. You can by really simple contractions that lower flaps over the holes from the comfort of your living room. Try any home hardware store like Ace or Home Depot.

Smart stat 2 fireplace remote chirps similar to a smoke alarm. batteries have been replaced twice. Chirps at the receiver which is a plug in style no batteries. The beep can be stopped for a few hours by...

The chirping has nothing to do with your fireplace or electrical. The Smart Stat II remote is for use on a millivolt system only. The receiver sends out a signal every 15 minutes. If it can't find the hand held remote, it will chirp. The hand held must be within a 15 foot range. There were some issues with the remotes back in 2009, I believe. They were faulty and would chirp for no reason. They were covered under warranty for one year. In my opinion, these remotes are not as good as they should be. A TV remote lasts for years without missing a beat and has a better response rate. I've seen these replaced up to three times a year. At $229 a pop, hmmmmmm. You be the judge. Sorry for the side track. Move the hand held closer to the fireplace. The decorative front that is on the fireplace can also interfere with the signal as the receiver is under the fireplace and the metal front can stop the signal. Either pull the receiver out from underneath and set on the hearth or just pull it closer to the front to keep hidden. Another issue with low voltage systems is dirty connections. If your wall switch or remote just suddenly stops working, try unplugging all connections and reconnect. Being low voltage, any bit of corrosion will prevent it from completing the circuit. Gas fireplaces are not difficult to work on or maintain. Just use common sense. There is a 110v outlet underneath to power the fan and any kind of electronic ignition there may be. So be sure to lock out the breaker if needed and shut off the gas supply. Most electronic ignition systems have a battery backup that will start the fireplace and radiate heat. Batteries should only be installed when the power is lost or they will corrode and be useless. The respective brand website usually have owners manuals and replacement parts breakouts for your review or download. Hope this helps. Crank up that fireplace and stay warm!

My Dimplex model #6901470100 (purchased new in 2007) just stopped working. It was on then just turned off by itself. Both lightbulbs are OK. What would cause this?

It probably overheated and the overheat module shut the heater down. It may reset itself once it cools down. Or the heating element has burned out. There are a host of issues with these electric fireplaces (not just Dimplex). They are sold as a decorative, supplemental heat source, but in fact, if you get more than a years use out of it without a problem, you're probably the exception. The heaters just aren't meant to run for a long period of time. It's like turning on a blow drier and letting it run for an hour. Nine times out of ten the blower driver will overheat and burn out.

I really wish I had better news for you (I answer this type of question at least 5 to 6 times a week), but I don't.

The only good news would be, if it's still under warranty (one year), have your Proof of Purchase and contact Dimplex USA. Technical Service: 1- 888-346-7539. Customer Service: 800-668-6663

I have a black soot on all my walls through the whole house especially the exterior walls. I believe it is caused by my propane fireplace. Im not sure if it is not ventilating properly or what the problem...

Is a Vented or Vent-free gas fireplace? I really suspect it's Vent-free (ventless) as a vented unit, unless the direct vent is clogged exhaust everything, including 85% of the heat out side.

Here are the things that will cause a Vent-free Gas Fireplace to soot.

  • Not having the fireplace cleaned and serviced, at least annually by a qualified technician.
  • Misplaced logs that impinge the main burner flames.
  • Running a ceiling fan at the wrong speed and in the wrong direction while fireplace is burning.
  • Burning scented candles while burning the fireplace.
  • Low Gas Pressure to the burner.
Here are the solutions to the above listed causes:

  • Have the fireplace cleaned and serviced.
  • Check your Owners Manual concerning the proper placement of each log,
  • Run the ceiling fan Counter Clockwise and at the slowest speed. The fan on the side of the switch should be in the UP position for Winter and Down for Summer.
  • Scented candles soot any way. Add the warm moist heat of the Gas Fireplace and they'll soot 50 times worse. The scent is not natural, it has an alcohol base like after shave & cologne. Stop burning scented candles. It has been proven that they greatly contribute to indoor air pollution.
  • Low gas pressure causes incomplete combustion, which causes the burner to soot. Have it checked by your propane provider.
Based on my 15 years in the hearth and home business and having sold and installed hundreds of these appliances, I am will to bet, it's a cleaning and servicing issue or misplaced logs.

Hope this helps you solve your sooting problem. I woud really like to know how it works out for you.

Thanks ... Rich
