I am not sure what symptoms would indicate bad braking.
Does it have trouble shifting from agitate cycle to the spin cycle? That is when the brake activates(between cycles).

Evidently part 22 is the entire brake assembly.

Thanks for getting back Clyde, It fills, drains, & spins fine. But it won't agitate. I think it is not locking on the push stroke. The motor is running But it won't agitate. Also on the spin, It turns off but doesn't stop the drum. It keeps spinning & slows down very freely. Like the brake isn't working. I think the brake should lock the trans. on the push stroke & It's not. That why the drum is moving around. Trans. is not avail. This unit has a matching dryer & being on Soc. Sec. I can't afford new. I must fix it again. Thanks Again for any advise.

For the agitating cycle the motor turns one direction then for spin cycle it reverses direction. First take off the main drive pulley to see if it engages the transmission properly. Turning it by hand should reveal if it works or not.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqKN4l4G...

SOURCE: Old Maytag washer LA182 motor replacement

Neil,
I need to know if the motor came with a wiring diagram when it was purchased or did it just come by itself. You may have to learn how to read the wiring diagram that is stored inside the control panel.

I have a 1980's Maytag washer LA-482 that fills, drains & spins, BUT won't agitate. It has a Helical Transmission that is NLA But I'm thinking it might be the brake assembly Because it continues to spin...

Remove the belt from the pulley under the machine.
check shaft and thrust bearing for damage. If good, go back to top of machine and take out the agitator.
check shaft splines for condition in agitator and shaft, if all ok, rotate shaft with slip pliers or the like and if you rotate it and get grinding noise your transmission is bad and needs to be replaced.
my thoughts are the 1980 machine has had a good life and it's time for a new machine.
Good Luck,
Gary

My Amana NAV2330AWW (S/N12279742EP) has been in service for six years. It has begun making a loud squealing, friction-like noise at the spin cycle. I removed the agitator assembly after being told it...

Hello,

Firstly i want to apoligize for the quesionable advice, some on here or elsewhere on the net fixed their washer and suddenly their are experts!!
Now Then as you know your washer is made by Amana/Speed Queen and has no agitator dogs(a quick search of parts breakdown will show anybody that) it also has no spin tube (aka basket drive),the brake pads which it does have would squeal only when washer stops spinning if they were bad just like squalling brakes on or vehicle the are quite till applied if bad,what the most likely cause of the noise is going to be the tub bearing,it is on the bottom of the outer tub. The inner and outer tub must be removed,it is advisable if replacing the tub bearing that you also replace the tub seal since it may not seal correctly once taken apart and leak badly.The hub taht connect inner tub to transmission must be removed so ya can remove the outer tub it requires a special wrench which is not to expensive but nothing else will work. IF ya want to go ahead and repair this the part numbers are;
TUB BEARING 40004201P
TUB SEAL 35-5655-1
SPANNER WRENCH 306P4

PROCESS TO REPLACE BEARING;
unplug power
remove front panels
remove screws holding top to cabinet
remove plastic tub cover by down slightly and lift tabs
remove agitator
remove bolts from hub under agitator and remove inner tub
use that spanner wrench and a hammer on nut on hub and remove nut in counterclockwise direction by hitting wrench w/hammer
lift off hub
remove rubber tub seal
remove all springs from outer tub by locking on vise grips and pull springs off
remove bolts holding outer tub to the to tub support
pull off outer tub and set down so bottom is facing up
remove old bearing and install new old
reassamble in reverse order

I have a Maytag A612 I purchased in 1986. I just found a water leak when it fills on the "warm wash' water setting. It does not leak on either the "hot" or "cold" wash water...

Your about right....and getting parts for a 1986 Maytag may be almost impossible. Maytag was sold many years ago and old parts were dumped.

My maytag washer stoped during the cycle with 8

You may have blown the internal fuse located in the lid switch. Could be you over loaded the washer and blew the fuse.
Unplug the washer and remove the four screws holding the control panel front in place. Two screws on top and two screws under control panel.
Remove the control panel and tilt forward.
Locate the lid switch assemble and remove glass fuse and inspect.
Door switch assembly should be replaced. When you order the proper fuse it should come with the door switch assembly.
Replace assembly. Reinstall the front control panel and four screws.
Plug machine in and test.

The inner tub moves slightly while the agitator is washing the load. Also, there is a grinding noise accompanying the inner tub movement that seems to be coming from under the machine. Thanks, RSR

This is an indicator that the helical-drive/brake package assembly needs servicing.

At this point in the machine's life, it is best to have the transmission evaluated, snubber pads replaced, and the brake package competently serviced by a Maytag Tech.

This is a complete disassembly process wherein several special tools are required to disassemble and reassemble the machine.

Maytag A408 Washer

ahh..so you need a 'brake' job? What you are experiencing, is not malfeasance by your repair dude. Instead, you may be living with a 'tolerance' buildup, whereby with new parts, and an older chassis, there is too much 'give' between the mechanical components(happens in some older cars, too, as my work on a 76 Jaguar XJS will attest). So, it's possible, that the slippage is actually a dimensional issue. So, how to adjust?

You know about shims, I'm sure. It's completely possible that you will need to shim some of the parts, which have most likely re-adjusted themselves to fill the tolerance gap(not unlike some political opponents should, eh?).

At this point, to revere some mechanicals like your well proven product, should entitle you to a free lifetime of service. You ought to tell your story to the Maytag HQ, methinks.

My Maytag PAV2300AWW Performa is noisy on spin cycle

If you are talking about a loud sqeaking noise, this is usually attributed to a worn snubber ring and/or brake assembly. You cannot lubricate the snubber to get rid of the noise. In fact, you may damage the washer if you do. A small amount of corn starch can be sprinkled under the bottom tub support where the snubber ring is to get rid of most noise related problems (this will be the bottom round plate where it meets the casing of the machine). However, if the snubber is worn too much, or if the brake assembly is worn they must be replaced. I would recommend replacing the following parts:

Brake Stator: 1057484 Price: $7.45
Brake Rotor and Lining: 1032674 Price: $16.70
Snubber: 1055142 Price: $4.35
Brake Removal Kit: 997909 Price: $99.40*

*Brake removal tool is required in order to remove the brake assembly and/or to replace the snubber. There is a 200lbs spring located under the Brake Stator that must be compressed PRIOR to removal or you could cause injury to yourself.

You can find all your parts and information at repairclinic.com. I am not affiliated with the website. I am merely recommending them because I have used their service before. Plus, they use the same repair parts as your major appliance repair companies, but at a lower cost.

The parts required to make the repairs aren't very expensive, but the tool required to do it IS. Also, if you've never worked on this type of washer before, this is not a job that I would recommended to the average do-it-yourselfer. Maytag is real good abpout providing the necessary instructions with their parts, but this is a bit involved.

Post back with comments and let me know if this helps you.
