Try a hard reset
Hello Dakin, check if you can change the entries from the control
If you manage to change, the problem can be found in the Nakamichi input change switches, you should check if they make good contact, for which you would have to disarm the front of the equipment to access the solder contacts of the switches and with a tester in the continuity position, corroborate that when pressing the button, the circuit is closed indicating the tester, condition of continuity
Good luck with the tests

Did you make sure your Speaker A or B switch is pushed in? This happened to me a few times where I thought the receiver was broke, but someone had accidentally turned of the speaker A switch...

My owner's manual is long lost, what do you need to know?
I don't know what problem you have, but mine, which Iv'e had since circa 1988, suddenly developed a failrly loud whistle from the speakers. I opened it for a looksee, and by chance spotted a dry joint on teh PCB. It had never been soldered properly. After soldiring that joint, the whistle is gone.....

SOURCE: Connect a phonograph turntable to a receiver w/o phono connection
you will need a little box called a pre-amp. This hooks up between the turntable and newer receivers without a phono input. A basic explaination & drawing of this type of setup can be found here
