See if you can find the factory reset setting. That should restore the settings to normal. Though remotes made for other JVC devices might work some of the controls, they can cause complications.
American E-Bay does seem to be selling the original remote at the moment. It might be second hand, but at least you know it will work.

If there was a dvd in the tray and the cable guy moved the dvd player, there's a good chance the disk might have slid off the tray and is now blocking the tray from opening. Also if the machine was moved there is a good chance the tray/laser lock might be on. It is a switch or button located on the bottom of your dvd player. Check your manual for exact placement. It is built in for shipping purposes so they don't get broken from rough handling. Hope this helped!
Ideas
1/ Turn power off for a while at powerpoint for as long as you want 5mins should be fine then turn on and try again.(which youve probably done already) as well as looking up your model number on the net to attain a info on your system.
Does the remote still work if so try to find unlock in menu/setting/functions but if it requires a digit code then youll need the manual as it could have an override built for cases such as yours.
start at jvc.com/dvd5.1 surround and find your model
good luck
