I have Sony Vaio Model no.PCG-71811W. First of all it does not power up with power button, and even after shutdown, the battery light remains solid orange.

First of all it does not power up with power button, but it does with the Assist button. Secondly even after shutdown, the battery light remains solid orange. The laptop also goes off within 10 minutes. I changed to a new battery, and cleaned the cooling fan and applied new heatsink compound. Still no change with the power button and orange light. The shutdown time has increased to 20 minutes, but it does go off by itself

running windows, what version? w7? what?>'
PCG-71811W , PCG were made in 1997 (first)

I carbon date all PCs, I help on.
posts on this model go back to 2005,
reviews on it list it as RARE. (and is 14 years ago that RARE)
    I see non sold used.
The RTC coin cell now bad, is top of MOBO
front left side, top of case off. or keyboard
    removed.
buying a new main battery first, why do that.
why not a $1 snap in coin cell first. so BIOS wakes up.? and works first.
then that 14 year old HDD why would that be good now,? smart tests fail.
what does the PC do good and bad, only bad told and that is not helpful to any tech.
when it does run ok, (seems kinda does)
does CrystalDiskinfo.exe free pass all tests.
get this free app and run it,
Id never buy a big battery until the PC ran perfectly on AC power alone first.
why spend that cash if 2 more things are bad inside.
    coin cell bead.
    Power pack bad.
HDD bad, (most are after 5 years old on laptops due to bumping laptops and the like)
    shorted modules inside (ANY)
there is your list, big battery not in list.
    big battery is LAST !

did you find this at a garage sale.
    it has zero value now.

Power pack 19.5Vdc 4.62A 90W (or more watts NEVER LESS)

when did it last run perfectly for you.
or bought it dead,? history matters,
    and unstated. any.
I can buy used PC with 10 problems inside.
    see?
the HDD if bad shut downs slow as will be booting the PC.
The PC test for overheating are simple
    and free, of cost, hwinfo32.exe
run that if not overeheated , then it is not.
zero cost test. free and safe.
50C par, 90c the intel inside shut the PC off all by its self. so if CPU is not too hot
then you barked up wrong tree.
    both programs are free, cystaldiskinfo
    and hwinfo32.exe.
if the PC is dead and cant run anything say so first. ok>?

Thanks Larry for covering all the points. I will start doing that. The Laptop is 7 years old and still runs Windows 7 Home edition.

  • Anonymous Sep 12, 2019

Larry, the problem was with the power button board, replaced it and everything works fine now. However replaced the BIOS battery as suggested.
Thank you and really appreciate for the detailed help provided. My knowlegde was upgraded to a new version.

1st leave the battery out,
then power only with AC power pack
push power for 10seconds and releases.

the batteries are bad, as more are, in the wild. most.

Testimonial: "A brand new original battery was installed. It did not help."

that is not what I said, I asked you to first run the PC ON AC power only, battery big removed.(or unplugged as the case may be)
such a simple test why not do that?

if that #1 test fails, then try a new power AC pack, if that fails, we have to take the PC apart.
does the long power reset check work
big battery out, AC pack out
push power button for 10 seconds, release
this resets the PC, power wise.
the run on AC pack only,

did you charge the battery for 24hours like your manual states, for sure new batteries.
    the power button can fail
or any part in inside PC (AC pack new)
IS THE pACK THE Correct one, did this PC in your hands ever work for you>? and for sure with that AC pack there>? many folks buy used PC with wrong pack, history matters
as does the voltage on the pack and the minimum wattages spec. on the pack.

lets say it fails AC only on new pack
we strip all PC's down to prove modules inside are not shorted , first removing all connections the OUTSIDe, test he PC with no USB devices or Monitors (VGA)> connected
    then we strip it down.
that is because any part in side can SHORT OUT.
OK? (if does it overloads the VRM regulators)

doing all tests with no battery big installed
then we replace that 9 year old RTC coin cell battery next, most of them die a 7 years old.
we never igore any RTC battery we test it or replace it, for $2
below 2.9vdc is bad, 3.3vdc is new voltage.

here is a generic, page on LT strip down

    http://www.pcdied.com/intel-magic/Powerb...

hint1: if the AC pack fails, the battery will never charge and you can replace the battery 10 times and will land same spot.
it MUST RUN ON AC power ALONE ! see why.?
and the pack must be the correct pack.
    matching this PC .
no frayed, cords or ends. or broken jacks
    as the page above shows.

if all this is confusing, get the PC repaired in shop., takes only 30 minutes to run al tests.
and inspect it. for wrong parts etc.
hands on is 10x faster than typing in this box
    hands on , eyes on.
even the power button fails. common too.

Hi Larry, checked some voltages, the power pack gives out 19.5 volts Dc correctly. At the battery terminals 3.7 volts is available on all 4 cell connections. Without battery on AC pack the LT boots but asks to check Disk. But it shuts down before the whole disk check procedure is executed. I will do the rest of the checks as advised by you. The fan is cleaned but I suspect it does not run at the right speed. I need to check the small bios backup cell. Thanks for taking out the time to post this info. Really appreciate it, and have gained tremendous knowledge going through the links sent by you. Thank you once again.

  • goneforever. Jun 12, 2019

that power pack good, leave the big battery out until the laptop runs perfectly again.
is always best practices testing and diagnosing any laptop.
yes , and to tell you , Ive never once seen any RTC coin cell 14 years old that was good.
that is why I carbon date all PCs first.

14 years, old , most PC are full of bad things, inside. batteries top the that list.
spec is 5-7 years so that battery is 2times
max spec. life. see. $1 part.

  • Anonymous Jun 13, 2019

Thanks Larry, I will keep you informed on the progress.

  • goneforever. Sep 12, 2019

yes old PCs with heavy usages even a bad button happens, I keep spares for mine.
thanks so much for telling the cure, others can learn from this.
On non desktops the button electronics is super complex, and not easy to test.
    desktops it's a 1min chick with a jumper wire
    ahhhh the button IS DEAD.

the portable devices likelaptops have a special
button interface card this is unique to all PCs made. very hard to diagnose them.
one way is to push the bottom at different angles. and if it wakes up it is bad.

The power switch might be damaged your cooling fan might not be working optimal. You might have to change both of them.
This happens when you laptoo receives a power surge usually the power supply would be damaged, but if not, then the results are what you have.

Thank you, I am looking into the problem, the fan for one is most probably not running at the right speed. The power switch seems OK as it boots on AC pack now, after the cleaning of the fan and applying fresh heat sink compound on the respective processors. I really appreciate the time taken out by you to post the comment. Thank you.

on AC only it asks for checking disk.
no USB devices connected, nor any cables but AC power connected.
then shuts down, that shut down does not seem right, the AC pack is working, but PC shuts down.
does it shut down if the HDD is removed?
a hdd can even short, not just go bad, or weak.

How long until the shut down?
if it runs longer when dead cold then shuts down, that implies CPU overheating. (also)
    Some bios, shut down if:
1: see fan go dead. or can not attain commanded RPM speed., or packed in lint !
2: IT sees CPU or GPU overheat (the 2 big chips)
3: will shut down if the VRM's overload.
The VRMs are onboard voltage regulators.
if they see(discover) a short, they shut down all by them selves (preventing smoke and fire)

some BIOS (vast exist)will shut down if the RTC coin cell is dead, and that makes the NVRAM
dead and with it dead the BIOS, to be super safe shuts itself and PC down, to protect from overheating.

To solve #3 if only that is true,we strip all PCs down. (to find the overloading module)

I have Laptops here , (fancy) that inside have 7 to 10 modules inside that can short
and cause shut down, cheap tables many have near nothing to remove to find shorts. 2 things at best.
this page shows how unique laptops are and just how many things side it can short.
lots. (we strip them down until the PC stays on)

SOURCE: Sony Vaio PCG-K30 laptop does not work

I hope that you did not burn the chip of the CPU... The first quick fix is going to be that you go to the local junk shop and buy some of the heat conducting compound. You, very carefully remove the CPU and follow the instructions of the compound package, you apply the compound. It is highly advisable that you construct a jury rigged bracelet with a wire attached and you put it on your wrist and ground yourself to a ground point on the computer. If you still have problems, I can still help you, but I will need to have certain info. Name of compter =Sony Vaio, model number, Motherboard ID and exactly your story, which you said very mice above, but I will not be able to get to it (it goes to the archives). I feel confident that you will be able to fix your computer... Thank you for considering our service...

SOURCE: Sony Vaio PCG-FRV25 Cooling Fan Issue?

I was going to suggest overheating before I read your own diagnosis; Yes, sound like the fan, but you can check by opening up and watching it. Or install temperature monitoring software such as Speefan;
If it is the fan it may well be that there is only one possible replacement - officially. But it is usually possible to cannibalize something cheaper to suit your purpose!

That is not normal definitely your battery has some problem and needs a replacement because a normal working battery should last for about 2 hours or more..

I have a Sony Vaio laptop, model PCG-384L. It will not power up. My wife indicated that she push some button that lock the power. Can seem to find the button that controls or locks the power button. ...

Typically that flashing light means low battery. Which makes sense, as you probably have an issue with the AC Adapter that you plug into the computer to charge it, or the DC Jack that this adapter plugs into on the laptop. Either of these things will cause your computer to not charge the battery, and if there isn't enough power it won't turn on.

I had one with the same symptoms, the way i fixed it is by taking it all apart and resolder the system chasis grounds on the mother board, then reseting the motherboard's memory battery. Please perform the following troubleshooting:

(i) Remove and reseat the RAM modules.
(ii) Remove the Battery and reinsert it after cleaning the metal contact.

If the issue persists even when the AC Adaptor is connected then try to get into the BIOS and check if the Computer restarts or shutdown automatically. Restart the Computer and press the F2 key as the VAIO logo appears to enter into the BIOS window. if the Computer shutdown even when in the BIOS then service will be required otherwise try reinstalling the Operating System.
