First make sure that you are using fresh batteries, or the camera will just shut itself off.
Under the camera's setup menu, look at the USB setting. Make sure it's set to Computer, not printer.
Start up the computer, connect the camera, and press the power button to turn on the camera (it does not start automatically). It should say Connecting on the camera display. If it starts up in image capture mode, then try another USB port on the computer (try all of them, starting with the
rear ports).
If you're running Windows, it should say Found New Hardware and begin to install it. Once that's done, open up My Computer and look for Removable Disk, that's your camera memory. The photos will be in the folders on that drive.
If you were not able to connect before, remove the memory card and take a test picture to save to the internal memory. Connect as before.
Still no success? Try it with another computer, there may be a conflict with other installed devices.
If nothing else has worked, the USB cable may be faulty. If your computer has a built in SD card reader, put the memory card in that to read it directly. If you do not have one, I recommend purchasing one. They are relatively inexpensive and will work with any SD card. A new USB cable is less useful.
Check the camera menus. There are several connection types.
