SOURCE: stuck dvd and no power

I fixed this problem in my DVP642 by replacing a capacitor on the main power board where the power chord hooks in. Take the top cover off (after unplugging player). You'll be able to locate the bad capacitor on the circuit board located on the very right. Look for location marked c316 on the circuit board. A bad capacitor will be bulged up on top. The capacitor you're looking for will be a black barrel shape with an aluminum top, this aluminum top will be bulged up or leaking on the circuit board. Replace this capacitor by desoldering the two leads into the board and replacing with an identical part you can pick up at Radio Shack for a couple dollars. My repair for this identical problem was a success. The blinking light is the tip off for this particular problem on these Phillips models.

SOURCE: my philips dvp642 dvd player has a blinking red

To add to the previous solution (which I followed myself), specifically steps 3 and 5...

The C316 may not be leaking brown fluid nor the bulging at the top might not be noticeable as was the case with mine. It might have you second guessing. Nevertheless, my unit had the same symptoms of the problem as described above and I went on with the "operation." (Don't mistaken the rubbery cream colored stuff at RB301 for brown leakage. I believe its there to protect/insulate.)

The exact capacitor I used from Radio Shack - 1000uF 35v, Part # 272-1032 It's actually quite a bit bigger than the original but fits and works fine. A picture of this newly installed capacitor is here (it's the baby blue one).

SOURCE: I have a Philips DVP642 DVD player. It has worked

First try a soft reset... unplug for 20 minutes.
Otherwise - the laser is dirty or misaligned.
A Repair shop can clean and align for about $50.
It takes specialized equipment and templates to align the laser - not something you can do on your own.

Lens cleaner discs don't work.

Power light blinking unable to turn on

And get no display?

Probably the power supply, or some other relatively catastrophic problem happened.
If it's still under warranty call Philips tech support first, for possible replacement.

Else you're probably looking at buying a DVD player, unless you want and are willing to open it up and fix it your self (time consuming).

My Philips dvd player model DVP642/37 is not working. The stand by/ on button flashes the red light on and off slowly and non of the other buttons respond on the machine or the remote for the dvd player...

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices.

If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.

In most cases you need to reservice the power board, or change the damaged capacitor. This capacitor is loacated on poer supply board. Also resolder the components heated area. Hope this works.

Pull out the power supply, it needs at least one bulging cap replaced - while you are there change a few in the area - I've done a few of these repairs - no probs.

Problem with starting

read on a forum that changing out c316 1000uF will fix the problem, mine will not turn on now, seems to have gotten worse over time. I will change the capacitor from 1000uF 10v to 1000uF 16v.  Look at your capacitor, mine looks like its ready to blow.  Most other capacitors on the board are rated at 16 volts.  I will be changing out the cap. to see if it works.
