mystery???
pete.
There are no mystery at all. If you leave flat battery inside watch for
a long period of time, battery may explode or leak. Leakage is
happening most often and when it happens it is allmost invisible to
naked eye.
However, the leaking solution consists of various
chemical solutions and they react with metal, alloy, brass, led and
other metal parts of which watch movement is made. This process is
called ''oxidation'' and it works like rust on metal. You can see it
wth a help of magnifier and it looks like tiny fungus layer all over
various metal parts. This layer do not transmit electricity as well.
Sometimes
it's possible to repair watch (depending on how much damage has been
done), but in my experience few times I came across the situation that
new movement replacement was needed.
All watch manufacturers are
advising not to leave watches with flat battery in and if not changed
for the new one ASAP, get the flat battery out of watch.
All you can do is to find your watch repair shop and ask what's possible to do. Speak to the watchmaker, not the jeweller.
Best of luck with your watch.
P.S.
