HP Office jet 7210 All in One. When I feed paper into the top to scan or copy, it does not take it and makes a horrible grinding noise. Message says "Scanner failure. Turn power off then on again." This does not fix it.
Lean the rollers in the automatic document feeder (ADF)
Remove the document feeder tray from the product by gently pulling it.
Lift the cover of the automatic document feeder by pulling it outward.
Gently clean the rollers with a very damp cloth ansd a dab of dish detergent.
Close the cover of the automatic document feeder, and then reattach the document feeder tray.
To clear the "scanner error" message do a Perform a partial reset
Disconnect the power cord from the product.
Press and hold # and 3 while reconnecting the power cord to the product, and then release both buttons.
Try making a color copy by pressing the Start Copy Color button on the product control panel.
If the partial reset resolves the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the error message displays again, proceed to the next step to try a semi-full reset.
If a partial reset did not work do the following: Perform a semi-full reset
CAUTION:
Performing a semi-full reset deletes any saved phone numbers on the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the product.

Try making a color copy by pressing the Start Copy Color button on the product control panel.
If the semi-full reset resolves the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the error message displays again, unit may need service.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe

Disconnect the power cord from back of printer ( while printer is on ) wait for 10 seconds and connect it back let the printer Initialize and Try to scan.
IF this does not work, you probably just need to uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
I also was not able to copy, scan or fax multiple pages through the ADF of our HP Officejet 7210 AIO, but it would print well from the computer.
It would either grab several pages at once, or not grab paper at all. The device was trying to work but had poor traction action. Not sure if that's the same issue you are facing, but if it is, this is what fixed my 7210: I purchased part number C7309-60091 which is the feed roller assembly, and part number C7309-60076 which is the separation pad from Encompass Parts, and replaced them. The ADF works great now. The HP Officejet 7210 had only 5,000 pages printed on it, so I chalked it up to our very dry atmosphere here.

I got the same error, and had it for months. open the ink door where it says office jet pro, it folds towards you, wait for the ink cartage to position to the left, then look inside and far to the right, and see if there is a wadded up peace of paper inside. Reach in and pull it out, it fixes the problem
chances are the feeder isnt feeding the paper at all, thats why you cant scan a single paper, try opening up the ADF and clean the feed rollers first, turn off the machine and gently rub the rollers again and again until you have a clean shot or surface, try this from thop to bottom rollers, please make sure though to insert uncreased paper and paper without eardogs on its leading edge, this could cause some delay upon feeding process
sometimes because it is exposed to dust, there is a tendency for the rolllers to slip, or you could be having a broken part that drives the feed rollers from your ADF.
I have same problem! The copy/scan function would feed the orginal from the ADF halfway and instead of making a normal loud feeding noise it made a horriable alarming sound and displayed an error message. To fix it: I waited a day or two and bang the top of the feeder cover with normal force while the original is feeding. It appeared the problem is resolved. I have no idea what the problem is, however I think if this work for few months at a time is fine by me.
Have an HP office jet d155xl printer and every time I put it on, it takes sometime to warm up then the "scanner failure" pops out on LCD with instructions to put printer off and on again. Same thing happens all over again.
