Defective image processor. use in continuous mode, but take only 1 shot. may not be expensive to fix. not user serviceable, and not something you can't live with if you can take images in cont mode.
consider having it evaluated by the factory and getting a quote for repair if it bothers you not being able to shoot in single shot mode.
nikon does seem to have more trouble than most in their non-premium products.
good luck

Horizontal white lines across the photo. Did not drop, or abuse the camera. Shifted to continuous mode and get lines on the first shot but clear on the subsequent photos
I liked the camera but at this point I can't say anything good about nor would I look to Nikon when shopping for a replacement. Spent good money on this and kept it safe all the time.
White lines appeared suddenly across my image midway through shooting a series of pictures. At times the image is completly white, other times there are lines across it. Behaves exactly the same whether in single or continuous mode.
I read somewhere else (Nikon site I think) that this fault was diagnosed in 2005 and that there is a free fix. You must download a form and send the camera to a Nikon repair centre.
