This is a common problem I see...however mine is a little more...odd.
My wii doesn't even show anything. Ever. It turns on and nothing shows up. Black screen.
Oddly enough, the sound works. This is leading me to believe that it has something to do with it being on HD mode? I had it hooked up to an HD tv at home but now at college it's on standard. Is there any way to change it to standard without...having a screen to look at?
Or is this a different problem in general?
Thank you!!!
I put the wii on, powers up but i get a total black screen. wiimote does not connect either. what can i do to resolve this?
i have already disconnected all wires and connections, left it off for hours and tried putting it on again. no change. Black screen still remains. HELPPPP
No sexyvimbi, it is just you have the HD cable sockets, so you need to buy the HD cables for your wii
You can get a detailed Wii Repair guide from here
Solution #1
Reduce wireless interference
Because the Wii Remote is wireless, outside interference likecell phones, computers (when there are online and connected to theInternet wirelessly), radios, wireless keyboards, and other devices cancause interference. Turn off those devices and/or disconnect anycomputers from the Internet.
Solution #2
Use a wired Nintendo GameCube controllor
When playing games on the Wii that support the Nintendo GameCube controllor, use that instead of the Wii Remoteand classic controllor. Before you start the game, plug in the GameCubecontrollor in the Wii's GameCube controllor ports (if your Wii isstanding up, open the lid on the top of the Wii to see the GameCubecontrollor ports). Once you start the channel, the Wii will recognizethe controllor.
Important Note: This only works with wired GameCube controllors.
Solution #3
Black screen, no connection solution
Another solution to this probelm is as follows
Solution #4
How is the setup between the Wii and the Wii Remote?
Problems can occur if your Wii is not set up properly, especially with the Wii Remote. Please read this FAQ about the Wii for more information on how to probably set up your Wii for maximum performance.
Solution #5
Do you hack your Wii?
If you hack your Wii, then this can cause major internal damage to the Wii and may result in the Black Screen of Death. The only difference however, is that this is not because of a connection problem, but because the Wii had suffered a fatal error. The only way to resolve this is to contact Nintendo for repairs...
It may be that your visual cord could be shorted out. Have you tried buying a new audio video cord?
Try hooking the wii back to a hd tv then go to wii settings and select screen type then pick the top one
When I connect my WII to the telly it the pictures are black and white but the sound is perfect! However the socket on my telly r 2reds, one white, 1 green, &1 blue..meaning the yeollow one is lacking :=(
could this b the course of the problem?
pliz help sum1...Fanx
I did the same thing. I think It needs to be plugged into a HD TV to see what your doing to change it back.
All you have to do is unplug EVERYTHING and keep it unpluged for atleast 15min.
Okay. I got it back on screen without using a HDTV. What you need to do is unplug the component Cable (the red, blue, green one) from the back of the Wii and plug in the standard video cable (Yellow, Red, White) and then plug this into your yellow, red, white video input on your TV. This will automatically change the Wii video output settings back to standard definition. After you have got the image back on standard video, you can now turn off the Wii and plug in your component cable and plug it back into the component input on your TV to get the nicer picture quality when you turn the WII back on. DO NOT CHANGE IT BACK TO HD OUTPUT IN THE WII SETTINGS! The Wii will automatically recognise your using a component cable on a standard TV and give you the superior standard component video output. Only ever change it to HD output if your TV is HD. If you do it again by accident do what I said above and it will fix it. The end.
this does not work!
I am on my second wii and the best thing I can tell you is when your wii has a problem, take 5 million dollars and do a super bowl add of you smashing it with a sledge hammer. Then explain the problem you had along with the other multiple problems and tell the world that you would'nt buy this product if it meant dying!

I have done the same thing. I accidentally changed the settings to HD and i only have a normal TV. I know nothing about technology and was hoping someone could help. I can't change it back becuase i can't see anything! The screen is unreadable. How can I fix it when i don't know what the hell i'm pointing at. Re-setting the console does nothing. Even taking out all the cables and re-plugging them turning it on or off. Nothing works. I can't use it because i can't physically see what im doing in order to change the settings. Please help.!
JUST BOUGHT A WII AND WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF PLAYING HEARD A LITTLE ROARING SOUND FROM THE SYSTEM AND NOW THE SCREEN IS BLACK
I have an hdtv and the wii pictue is blury. When I try to change the resolution setting on the wii to hdtv the setting is grayed out and I won't let me change. Anyone know how to fix this?
i have the same kind of problem. i have a hitachi monitor which is stuck on my living room wall so i can't get to the back of it. i asked a guy in sevenoaks hifi if he knew how i could play my consoles on the monitor. he told me to plug them into harmen/kardon sound system that i use on the back. i plugged the yellow red and white ones in but only get sound. i've tried leaving the red and white ones in but placing the yellow one into the yellow sockets under the monitor. the TV goes *click* telling me that it has been detected but i flick through all the channels and it won't work, just sound. can anyone help me?
I had the wii for a little over a year now and it always worked fine, recently the screen would not come on it stays black i can hear the sound but cannot get a picture can anyone help?
I HAVE NO PICTURE I ALREADY CONNECTED THE CABLES AND DOUBLE CHECK THEM I BEAR LY BOUGHT THE WII GAME
black screen, have sound but no vidio, checked connections & different ports on tv, but still black screen.
I recently bought a Japanese Chipped Wii... For some reason the screen is in Black and White and I Dont know how to change it... at first i thought it was the TV, but i tried it on two different Televisions and the same problem keeps happening. There were two of the TV plugs that came with it so i doubt thats the problem. And does anyone know how to change the language to English? If anyone can help, mainly with the black and white screen problem, i would relaly appreciate it! Thanks!!
I got the same problem when I turned on my wii, I got a black screen but I still heard the audio. I try so many method but it still doesn't work. Unplug and re-plug the cable.
Anyone have idea what's wrong with my machine??
Thanks
I have a somewhat similar problem. I'm using the standard AV cable. When connecting the cables, the sound comes out but not the video. I checked my cable on another Wii and it worked. I checked my Wii with another cable and it did not work and also on 5 different TVs. This lead me to think the problem is in the Wii itself.
I have a launch Wii and it never game me problems, never fell nor suffered any damage.
I realize the black screen is happening to some people because they are using a component cable, thus I have no idea what my problem could be since I'm using the standard AV cable.
Help appreciated, thanks.
I can here the sound from the home screen of the wii but all i see is black on the tv
the first thing i did was try a new tv to see if it was the tv that was not working. The second thing i did was try blowing on the colored wires Then my dad tryed to fix it but it did not work. What should i do?
Basically, if you have sound and no picture the following is likely:
Your wii settings are set to HD, and you are using the av cable - if your tv supports HD, and has a component socket, then just buy the component cable and your problems will likely be solved.
If you are using a standard CRT tv or basically a tv that doesn't support HD, then you are suing the standard av cable through the scart socket, which doesnt support HD - hence, there is no picture, if your wii has been set to HD.
I had my wii on HD settings on a HDTV. Long story short, now on standard AV cable through scart socket on a tv which doesn't support HD:
So I have sound but no picture, not realising i should have changed the setting prior from switchig from HDTV with component cable to standard tv through scart.
Obviously, plugging it in to the standard tv via the AV cable did not automatically alter my wii settings off the HD setting.
If this is the case for you, i don't know a way or resetting it....of course, if you get a componenet cable and set the wii up on a hdtv, you can set the setting back, so that when u use the AV cable again, you will have a picture.
VVVVV
But I haad used the standard AV cable on my TV since the Wii was launched and always worked until one day it just stopped. I don't know what could happen it.

I've just bought the Wii Component AV cable and connected it up. I get sound and a gray yet read-able and viewable picture, but it's just gray. I have it on HDTV settings and I have an HDTV. But it's only gray. I have 5 ends to connect but only 3 holes to connect them in. Help?
while im watching vidoes on my nintendo wii online, my wii just froze. i unplugged it and turned it back on and after that it shows a black screen. NO SOUND NO PICTURE
i have the exact same problem what do i do
I bought the last year , but suddenly the video doesnt work , what it could be the possible solution
I have the same problem.... I just bought the Wii which I am connecting to my PC monitor that I use for TV (via the PC). The problem is that when I power up the Wii, the monitor says SIGNAL OUT OF RANGE. I am connecting the Wii to the VGA input via an adapter cable specifically for the Wii. I am guessing that the Wii default video settings are incompatible to the monitor, however I am unable to access the settings as I can not see anything!
The cable came with a green (RCA) connector which it says to use to adjust the output format of the Wii, however the monitor has no RCA input (hence the reason I bought the cable).
Is there any way to toggle the settings without seeing anything? Anyone want to offer the steps to wander through the menus to change the video settings?
Thanks.
same problem, blank screen.tried it on 2 hd tvs ad 1 standard.nothing happened.my wii console worked perfect until i sync the fit board to it.now i just get blank screen

i have the problem that when i plug it into the tv, and start the wii, the screen is black and theres no sound. it worked fine before though. can some1 help me? btw i tried it on a standard tv and a hdtv, but both of them dont work.
I have the same problem, but with mine, there is no sound at all, only a blank screen.
I have a slightly different problem being that my Wii comes up on in a very bad quality black and white screen with sound. I tried unplugging the leads and putting in the standard video cable but still the same. For months it was Ok then one day just turned it on this this happened. Any help will be great in lamen terms as I am not a computer/technical person one little bit. Thanks
Not one single comment here says how to fix the wii.
