first u gonna need is router or swicth hub link with a 2 cable
the cable must attach latop to router or switch hub
then u must attache the desktop to router or switch hub
or may be!!
there some setting to to change!!!
the work group must be the same in your latop or desktop
to change the work group!!!
steps
1.click to start
2.settings control panel
3.system
4.computer name
5.click change
6.the work group of the two computer must be thesame
7.and then apply then restart

I then use explorer and see Canon there
I click that and find my photo(s) and drag them anywhere I what
my cell phone same steps. (Samsung)
same with kindle or nook
same with USB sticks.
but NO OS stated by you,, could be linux for all I know.
