My daughter has an Samsung schr 450 which thinks it is on silent all the time. When the volume is turned up it just goes to vibrate. cannot listen tomp3 tracks or ring tones

Here is how to perform Samsung SCH-R880 hard reset:
1. Turn off the phone
2. Press and hold the volume down key, the power key and the navigation key at the same time until you see a black screen with blue writing
3. Use the volume keys to select the factory reset.
In the Settings menu, select Sounds. The Sounds menu appears in the display. Select the Master Volume sub-menu which allows you to set the default volume for incoming calls, messages and alarms. You can set the volume to Silence All, Vibrate, Low, Low/Medium, Medium, Medium/High, or High. The Vib. on soft key allows you select vibrate in addition to the sound.

You can turn on vibrate 2 different ways
Either turn the volume down using the side buttons. It will eventually go into vibrate mode
Or just flip open the phone and hold down the * key (bottom left button) for 2 seconds. The phone will enter silent mode and vibrate.
To place the handset in Silent / Vibrate Mode Step 1 To place the handset in Silent / Vibrate Only Mode, hold down the pound key (#) for about 2 seconds. To exit Silent / Vibrate Mode, perform the same action while in Silent / Vibrate Only Mode. You will see a confirmation message for Silent / Vibrate Only Mode, each time you enter or exit Silent / Vibrate Mode. The SCH-U470 (Juke) handset will vibrate rather than ring when you receive a phone call, message or alert while in Silent Vibrate Only Mode. Step 2 While in standby mode, press the volume key, located on the left side of the handset, then select either “Vibrate Only", “Alarm Only” or “All Sounds Off”. To disable perform the same action while in Silent / Vibrate Mode. The SCH-U470 (Juke) handset will vibrate rather than ring when you receive a phone call, message or alert while in Silent / Vibrate Only Mode.

Before turning your phone off each time, reduce your phone's volume to 'Silent'. Each time you turn your phone on, the tone will not sound. Once you turn your phone on again, raise the volume again to hear the ring tone. You can also leave the volume in the 'Vibrate' mode, and it will vibrate each time you turn it off or on.
