The exact procedure for this is outlined in the owner's manual. Also, it may come with the lamp. These lamps have expected lifetimes where they will output the correct amount of light. There is an internal timer that keep track of lamp time. The intent here is to replace the lamp before it fails. It is up to you whether or not you replace the lamp when the indicator says to change it. At the very least, purchase a lamp to have ready if the current one fails. Some lamps will fail before the timer indicates replacement time, others will work for many hours after that timer expires. There is no way to tell. Each lamp is a bit different.

If you can not locate the owner's manual, please update this to confirm your model number and I'll locate the sequence for you.

How do you replace the lamp

If you don't have the manual handy you can download it here.
http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/PT50LC13.PDF
But I did not find it much helps as all you need is a TY-LA1000 lamp that can be purchased from a number of dealers on the internet, or you may have a shop locally that will sell you one.
I have even found them as cheap as $124.00 on Amazon.com.

The replacment instructions will come with the new lamp and also how to reset the lamp timer.
But here is a link to the lamp instructions.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.
I am doing this for free.

From the info you gave, it does sound like the lamp is bad. The sound you hear is the ballast trying to ignite what used to be a lamp. The lamp is assessable throught a 6x6 cover usually in the rear of the set held on by usually two screws. After the cover is off ( with a flashlight ) locate the screws(2) that hold the lamp housing in, remove those and it should slide out. Make sure you unplug the set first and remember to reset the lamp timer witch is located in your owners booklet after your done with the set on.
