On an A4 scanner the process is a bit more complicated than on a sheet fed scanner.

You have to do two scans on these types of document.
First scan the top
Then scan the bottom
save each as different file names eg. legal1.jpg and legal2.jpg (assuming you save in jpg format)

Now with a suitable graphics program you splice the two pictures together carefully.

This may mean a re-scan if you got one of the scans crooked or badly wrong.

If you have a person that understands graphics packages they could show you quite easily

There are lots of different graphics programs and it depends on which you choose as to how easy or hard the joining of pictures is.

How to copy legal to letter on copystar CS 4005i

Make sure your default settings are for AUTO paper selection and 100% magnification to start. That is the most common default settings. Then, under "Zoom" change to AUTO magnification and under PAPER SELECTION specify Letter (either landscape or portrait). Now when you copy a legal original (8.5" x 14") it will be reduced at 78% to fit it on an 11" sheet. An alternative is to use "X-Y" zoom. Now you can stipulate 78% for the "X" dimension and leave the "Y" dimension at 100%. You will want letter size paper to be feeding lengthwise (portrait). Now you can copy legals and the image is reduced top-to-bottom only, leaving it much more readable.

We bought a canon pixma MX870 printer because it was supposed to be able to copy legal sized documents. The cassette on the one we received will not extend to handle Legal Sized paper, and the scanner bed...

Some info from Canon's site in the specs:

Max. Document SizeFlatbed:8.5" x 11.7"
ADF: 8.5" x 14"

This machine can only copy legal documents if you put them in the sheet feeder, not on the flatbed.

As for the paper supply, the cassette is indeed too small for legal paper. The automatic sheet feeder, however, will handle legal paper. That's the tray in the rear that you use for specialty paper; see page 17 of the Getting Started manual.

If you use the ADF and the rear tray, you can copy legal documents. That may not be as convenient a solution as you were hoping for, but it is better than no solution at all.

Change legal size to letter size

scan it as a document, re-scale it in required size and save then print in required size.

these adjustments are in your word or office programs. if you need to make it to copy, insert your original in the scanner, in paper tray insert your letter paper, select copy and then re-size, this should do it "on the run".

Legal size copies

Your printer doesn't support Legal size to Scan and Copy, you can scan/copy it by reducing the size of the paper from the menu. 10% will fit since the actual paper size supported by your printer is 8.5X11.7inch while the legal size is 8.5X14inch. Good luck. For more info check out here : http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06b/18972-18972-238444-12019-3328086-2511708-3643610-3643611.html

How do i get my printer to print a legal size copy

In your printer settings as you hit print
select the printer setting prefferences

When you copy through the software program from brother you can change this in there. Just redo the prefferences.

Legal Sized 2-sided Copies through Automatic Feed

Does the copier print correctly when copying off the glass? I suspect that the document feeder has been set up to feed other paper sizes eg A4, A4R. Because of the conflict between sizes the copier adjust the image.
