Tray Opens and Closes Repeatedly After Disc Jam

A disc was jammed in the tray while in Disc Exchange Mode (another disc was playing at the time). I turned the player off, removed the cover and cleared the jammed disc from the tray. Now whenever I turn the unit on the disc tray opens and closes automatically but won't play a disc or respond to any commands. Symptoms: Turn on power, the player hums for a few seconds, the tray opens and player hums again, then tray closes and repeats the same process over and over. I power cycled the unit to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

I checked the tray and the ribbon cables and they appear fine. Perhaps the problem is related to the fact that there was a disc playing in the player when the jam occurred. After I cleared the jam the disc was still in position to be read rather than returned to the disc tray. It seems that the unit is stuck in 'play mode' and won't release the disc and return to normal operation. Is there a way to reset the player or an override to make it release the disc? Any other ideas?

Tray timing is out of alignment, probably from tray being forced open or closed. Removed cover, removed screw from center of CD turntable, removed two metal clips holding sliding tray down on left side. I ejected tray assembly first and shut off power and unplugged unit lifted left side of tray and experimented with black gear that controls the lifting of disc and the ejecting and retracting of tray. Tried to adjust it to the ejected position as best as possible then powered up and retracted. Next power down and upplugged. Inserted a cd anywhere, note slot # plugged in unit turned on power. Watched disc indicator led's to calibrate with slot if the numbers don't match up, power down, lift up disc turntable to disengage from gear drive near center post and turn to align disc with laser and disc pickup and drive assembly. If tray is not in correct position too align with disc pickup and laser reader assembly lift left side of tray andmove on gear to addjust.

I have the same problem. I opened the player and watched the drawer slide in and out. There is a white spindle with a ramp along the inside of the spool. This spindle is supposed to turn and the drawer moves in. As it turns a pin attached to the laser assembly runs along the spindle's ramp. This raises the laser assembly so that it is fully engaged whent he drawer is closed. For reasons I could not discover the spindle was not turning. Further investigation would mean taking out the entire drawer and removing other gears and spindles.
My guess is that repair is more expensive than replacement.

Original fault tray would not stay closed, opened up 460 case and then removed 2 screws on rear of drive. unplug 2 ribbon cables.
unscrew 1 screw in micro switch pcb rotate and spay cleaner into switch and rock switch several times until the reading across switch is 0 ohms before you start you will find the switch has about 2.5 k of resistance across it witch is too high.
as long as you have about 4ohms it will work.

Hello
According to your description, it seems that the disc tray is not loading into it porperly i thinks. Just do one thing. Without any disc in tray, close the tray either by using remote control or the front panel opn/close button of the system. If the tray closes first, and then reopens again without any command, make sure that the disc tray mechanism does not working properly, and the disc is not loading into it in place.
If this is alright, place a disc in the tray, set close, and push the tray with your finger slightly as it closes, and see whether it loads properly and play the disc. If so, loading belt inside the loading mechanism is worn out, ans should be replaced. In most cases, this may be the fault. Check it.
You can do the repair work, if you have some knoledge in electroncis, and its mechanical function. If not, get it repaired by an experienced service technican. Most of them can do this work, as it is simply a mechanical one. OK.

Cd tray opening and closing all the time

Dear friend, my sony dvd drive tray opens and closes itself, it is mostly a problem related to hardware. in my case I removed the IDE Data cable connected to the dvd drive and reconnected it again. now my dvd drive works well, I think the problem was the IDE data cable, may be a loose contact.due to this loose cantact,a jung signal goes to the dvd drive, which opens and closes the tray frequently without our knowledge.

Opening/closing game, not very fun.

looks like your switch is jamed or fried, or you installed a modchip incorrectly. If you still are in the return/exchange period, exchange it

Xbox does not read discs.

Getting to the dashboard screen is a good thing but still cannot rule out a bad circuit board or power supply. All the symptoms point to a bad DVD drive but the opening/closing by itself do indicate a problem with the microprocessor. Can you turn the power on and off with the small button?? If not, would definitely suspect bad board.
