try to reformat and reprogram the laptop or check the dvd driver maybe some wires on it is loose go to the nearest computer shop to fix it.

one reason may be that your writer may be old and the lense must have died.

another is that the lense require cleaning.

the last one is that you need to upgrade the drivers and firmware for your writer. if its sony, you will get here. otherwise you have to find out in google the required firmware.

Are you sure you have a DVD writer and not just a DVD reader, CD writer?

I have come across this quiet abit. U could try updating the firmware but I would say that the lazer is past its best. I presum it still read the cds fine? I would suggest getting another drive if firmware update doesnt work

Sounds like the driver is missing. Do you have the driver disc, if you do then reinstall it. Have you also reinstalled the program to run cd/dvd ie Nero. You should have all the drivers on a disc that came with laptop. If not, try going to the following site and see if the missing driver is available.

all you need to do is remove the keyboard on the laptop, and remove screws, once you have it open you should see a screw holding in the old dvd drive, just unscrew it and take it out and refit the new one and seal it back up and thats you..
