Sounds like the fan bearings are wearing out. this causes imbalance and makes a vibrating howling noise.

Testimonial: "I appreciate the answer. I guess I would replace the fan?"

FINALLY fixed this problem. It's NOT the fan motor. Tried that. It's NOT the control board. It's NOT how full you load the freezer or fridge. Mine is full. The problem is this: When they ship the units from the factory, there are two pieces of rubber trim that seal the left and right side of the fan box at the back of the freezer. During shipping, the trim slides down, exposing a 1" to 1/2" gap where air can get sucked in. This turns the fan box into a musical instrument. FIX: I simply put some electrical tape over the open spaces, and the howling stopped. It's been a week with no sound at all. Previously it howled all day, every day. The proper fix is to loosen the fan box and slide the trim back up into place, but putting tape over the gap will do the same thing and is easier. Enjoy your quiet kitchen! P.S. to GE: Please put some sealant on these gaskets before you ship them from the factory, so that they do not slide out of place during shipping. I'm sure they were silent when they left the factory, but you need to account for shipping. And inform your telephone staff of this fix.

My fridge is howling pretty loudly when ever it runs , the howling is coming from behind the ice maker turned the ic e maker off but unit st ill howls what s wrong

Hi, It sounds like the evaporator fan motor is going bad or there is frost building up and hitting the fan blade.
Unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear panel inside the freezer and locate the fan.
You can plug the refrigerator in and see if the fan is making the noise.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

My GE side by side refridgerator makes a "howling" sound. Any ideas?

the problem you are having is in the main control board. ge has had a problem with this part causing the fan motor to go into high and low speed which causes the howling noise. unfortunately it is a costly fix, around $125 for the part. if you are savy to changing this part it is a matter of unplgging about 5 connections and replugging them. the new board has an extra set of pin that nothing connects to. READ the instuctions and it is a simple fix, saving about $50-60 in labor costs.

Howling - Which is the correct fix

I think I have the same problem. The unit is also about 2 years old (GSH25KGRBB). I have an extended warranty. They already replaced the controller card. I see it is the exact part number you have mentioned. It seemed to help for awhile but I think it has gotten worse again. The noise is more consistent after they changed the board. Less revving up to "turbo" mode. Howling is a good description. I can hear it now, on the other side of the house. I would change the fan out. I think they did the board first because it probably is easier even if the part cost is higher. I will probably call them back again. This will be the third time. The first time they just changed the little flapper on the ice dispenser. Otherwise the unit cools and runs flawlessly.
