My Kenwood KDC-252U radio just started flashing protect on the screen.

Usually, when you see "Protect", the audio system has detected a short in the wiring. You'll have to check for loose or broken wires and missing insulation on wires that are touching anything else in the vehicle. Check all of the speaker leads from the wiring harness to the speakers.

If you can't find any wiring issues, press the reset button behind the faceplate. To take the faceplate off, press in on the upper left corner and then pull the left side away from the dash. Use a pen point or an unfolded paper clip to press the recessed button. It's below the CD slot a bit left of the center of the main unit.

If the "Protect" message continues, your CD-receiver requires service at a service center.

I hope this helps. You can see a picture of the location of the reset button on page 4 of the manual. You can find a copy of the manual from Kenwood support here: http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/index.php?model=KDC-252U&lang=index . The current link to the manual is http://manual.kenwood.com/files/52d6099c6e64c.pdf .

I bought a car with a KDC BT945U Audio Radio, but no manual. All it does is blink "Protect". It has a remote but pressing buttons on it doesn't change anything. Where can I get an...

The manul for the KDC-BT945U is available from Kenwood: http://www.kenwoodusa.com/Car_Entertainment/2010_Car_Entertainment/KDC-BT945U . Click on the Manuals tab. The direct link to the English version of the manual is http://manual.kenwood.com/files/4c3ba7ba66e53.pdf .

When Protect is blinking in the display, there is a short circuit in the speaker wire. Make sure that it is correctly installed and that the wire is not touching the chassis. Insulate the wire if needed. Then press the Reset button which is on the front of the main part of the unit (rotate the faceplate down) on the left side. (It's about where the source button is on the faceplate.) See page 70 of the manual for the wiring diagram and page 4 for a picture of the Reset button.

If the Protect message continues, you need to take it in to a service center.

I hope this helps.

My kenwood is protect. how can unlock it? Where i find the codes?

First check your speakers and speaker wires for shorts and grounds, then try pressing the reset switch. If all checks out good and the reset switch doesn't work, you may have a bad output ic inside of the deck.

I am installing kenwood kdc-mp443u. it is flashing protect and i can't remove it. can you help please?

A speaker wire has a short-circuit, crossed, or touches the chassis of the vehicle it activates the protection mode function.
? Wire or insulate the speaker cable properly and press the reset button. If the "PROTECT" code does not disappear, consult your nearest service center.
I have attached a link for you which is for a free Kenwood KDC-MP443U instruction manual download. Nice receiver by the way!

Protect Mode (Blink): The speaker wire has a short-circuit or touches the chassis of the vehicle, and then the protection function is activated.

Solution: Wire or insulate the speaker cable properly and press the reset button.

Here is a copy of the Instruction Manual for the Kenwood KDC-X790 and KDC-MP732.

My kenwood kdc-mp53u flashes PROTECT whats wrong with it?

Protect indicates that there is a short or a grounding problem usually within the speakers2_bing.gif or the speaker wiring. Locate and press the reset button (pinhole). If protect comes back then disconnect all speakers, reset and connect them back one at a time until protect shows up again. This will help you find out where the unwanted DC signal is coming from. If protect shows up when all speakers are disconnected, then it may need service.

Security Code for Protect mode

Turn on the car so the radio is flashing "Protect." Look on the front / removable face of the stereo. On it you will find a small round hole - that's a reset button. Find a small paper clip, unfold the clip and stick it gently into the hole. The "Protect" will stop flashing, and Kenwood will be displayed. Unfortunately all your settings/presets will be gone, but at least the stereo is working again!
