i replaced to door lock, and while I was at it the hinges and door lock latch.

this solved the problem. i found it had worked loose by leaning on the door.

you can find the parts at various vendors on the internet if you are handy to replace them yourselves. or call in a tech. i think the parts were under a $100 in total.
