SOURCE: How do I clean the INSIDE glass/platen?
You mean the inside of the scanner glass? (The platten is a part of the print unit),
You'll have to remove the sides and read cover. Unplug the scanner wires and remove the scanner assembly. Separate the document feeder from the scanner bed. Open the covers of the scanner bed (usually there are screws holding it together). Remove the glass and clean it. Reverse the process to reassemble.
Be careful. Canon multipasses are built a little like a Chinese puzzle box. There are little snaps everywhere as well as screws. Watch out you don't force anything and cause the snaps to break.

Most Mustek scanners have a black inside cover on the lid, this can give a black line down the side of the job.
ether cover the inside of the lid with white paper or place a bigger sheet on top of the sheet to be scanned!

Found the solution at http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=239&modelid=13170&kbpage=yes , then enter "clean platen glass" in the search window, and select item #1 "ERROR LCD: PLATEN GLASS DIRTY, CLEAN PLATEN GLASS ". This gives step-by-step instructions on how to clean the area dealing with the platen glass.

Cleaning the glass is rather simple. Take the 2 screws under the cover out. Now gently lift the top part of the scanner (some force may be needed). Then the scanner is in 2 parts and the glass can be cleaned inside and outside with a wet wipe glass cleaning pad. Dry the glass with a towel and inspect the glass with a lamp, that no cleanser remains are left. Now install the scanner in reverse order.

To open the Canoscan 8600 to clean the inside of the glass: Gently pry off the silver "c-shaped" trim piece on the front of the scanner. Slide the silver trim pieces on each side of the scanner forward and remove them. Gently pry off the remaining black trim piece on the front of the unit. This exposes 3 phillips head screws at the front of the scanner. Remove them. Pull straight up on the rear lid of scanner (where the 2 hinges are) to remove the top. This exposes 2 screws at the bottoms of the wells that secure the hinges. Remove them. Now the top is held by only 2 clips - 1 on each side. Pull up gently on the left side of the panel, front and back, and slide the panel back towards the rear. That should free the clip. Repeat for the right side. Take it easy, and you won't break anything.
