Without knowing which model mixer you have I cannot be specific as there are 5qt models with very different motors. Parts are available and the mixer can be fixed. Doing it yourself makes it much more affordable.
Service Manuals covering the two types can be found at:

SOURCE: mixer will not start
The motor slides in from the rear, which in held on by just a couple of screws. I would check the brushed first to be sure they are not worn. They are the two big plastic slotted screws to either side. I have seen them actually melt from the heat as they get worn. You may need to clean the armature with a glass brush when cleaning them.
SOURCE: kitchenaid mixer makes a lot of noise. The beater
Hi - I've been searching for general info on KitchenAid stand mixers and ran across this so I'm throwing my $.02 in... Since KA stand mixer bases are essentially made of cast metal parts, there is a very slim chance that there is a lateral misalignment (side-side) unless it got dropped...eek! Sounds like a head height adjustment issue. Check out this from KitchenAid Conversations:

Good luck.

SOURCE: My Kitchenaid mixer (k5ss lift bowl?) smells hot
I think you have a K45SS. It sounds like there is a problem with one of the gears, probably the worm gear. The worm gear is designed to be the first to fail if the mixer has struggled with a heavy dough or other difficult to mix substance. The best way to establish the cause will be to open the head up and check the gears for signs of damage.

Hi WWW_SOCRAFTI, you can easily download both the Owner’s Manual and Parts List manual for your K5SS mixer online from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this model range), and then select this file: KSM50PPWH0.pdf (5156.65 KB) from the Owners Manuals (9) list and this file: KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4). Check to verify they match your mixer model. You can save them to your PC hard drive, and then you can print a hard copy if you wish, or just refer to it when you need to use it.
The reason I suggest downloading the Parts List manual is that should you decide to try and troubleshoot and fix your KA mixer, this manual will be invaluable in the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer along with listing all the part names and numbers. Having the correct part names and numbers is critical when reordering replacement parts when your mixer eventually will stop working.
Good Luck with your mixer, I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

SOURCE: Bowl Lift
I had this problem and fixed it with some grease on the bowl lift lever. I used coconut oil for the grease as its obviously food grade. I greased the exterior which was the cause of the problem and the inside of the bowl lift lever. To get to the inside you can flip the mixer over (unplug it first) and remove the base with 3 screws to improve access. If further disassembly is reqired the C clip can be removed from the bottom of the mechanism and then slide the spring out. The bowl lift stand then comes out (you need to remove one screw if it catches) and you can easily reach inside. When putting it back together get someone with small hands. The C clip is easy to drop in the machine and easily lost.
