I tried to update my new TomTom one and I lost all my stored favorites. I also tried to do the restore and it did not fix. I tried to store favorites again and the screen freezes and restarts and they are lost again. I am very frustrated and am ready to buy another brand of system. This is my second one of the exact same model, the first one turned off one night and never came back on only after owning it for a few days.
There is no solution, and the manufacturer is not amenable to any news of this.
It used to be possible to remove the mapsettings.cfg file from the TomTom unit's maps before downloading and installing a new map, then to replace the file; however, TomTom changed the coding on the latest maps so that the software no longer recognises the old cfg file. There is a complex workaround where you change your favorites, one by one, into Points of Interest - but it seems pointless having a Favorites item when you have to do this.
It's a pain but the directions in this link still works for me (after map update).

Tom Tom discourages any communication of any kind from its customers. I really liked the Tom Tom better than the Garmin I used to own, but I must say that Garmin is much more receptive to customer support. Right now Tom Tom's entire web support is down and there is no way to contact them.
I stopped subscribing to the map update service (so they lost about $100/year) because every time Tom Tom Home updates to a more current map, I lose all my favorites and I travel frequently so I have a bunch of favorites saved. Now I just don't update anything.
The favorites are stored with the map. When you update the map, you overwrite/delete the favorites. Here is the solution... http://www.tomtom.com/support/solution.php?GID=1&PID=1954&SID=0&CID=215&Language=4&FID=5655
I had the same problem when I got my TomTom One. turned out it was a faulty SD card. If you have a spare, copy the contents across to the new card and see if it happens. Meanwhile let TomTom know and they will replace it straight away if you're still under warranty.
Reset the unit by pushing a bent paperclip or pin into the hole on the bottom marked 'reset' turn it back on, plug it in & charge it via USB overnight or as long as you can in the car, make sure the led on the top is green, tap the bottom right of the screen & check the battery symbol on the unit says charging underneath.
If this doesn't help.
contact them about the problem...

The code that I down loaded does not work. The Germini that came in the rental car was pretty easy.It ask for the state, city, ect Then you just put in the street name and address. Go back to your favorites and its there to see. I am trying to update
