I have seversal problems -- The Scanner Lock is on and I can't figure out how to turn it off. Now I can't copy or fax. The machine makes a grinding noise when I turn it on. I think this started after I pulled out a paper that was stuck. And the Cyan color ink says it is empty even after I put in a brand new cartridge. It used to print b&w jsut fine now... Currently, I can't get the printer to print at all..

The lock is a slide switch next to the large glass when you open the top cover, when it is locked the scanner can't move and makes a grinding noise. It's easy to bump into the locked position and easy to unlock.

When I send a fax, the recipient gets all dark or black sheet. Thinking this was the recipients problem, I faxed again to a different fax number, same thing happened.

To fix the problem you have to check the scanner of your fax machine. It might not be functioning properly. Try to observe the fax machine while sending a document, look at the scanner section and see if the light of the scanner is turned on or lighted. If it's no longer lighted you have to replace it.

Outgoing fax was received as blank

Hello,

Make sure that you sent the fax face down.
If all your faxes are sent blank, there may be a problem with the scanner. Try making a photo copy placing the page face down, if your copy comes out blank then the scanner is finished.

If your photocopy does not come out blank then the problem is on the other end and not your machine.

Thanks,

Pat

Scanner locked message on display. Will not copy

Check if the transit lock may have engaged due to movement. These locks prevent the scanner from moving while moving the devices during shipping. They sometimes engage by themselves.

Black pages received when faxing to others

Your scanner array is bad. This is a light "bar" that lights up to scan your originals before they are sent out. You can test for this by making a copy with your machine. The same scanning function is used to make a copy as it is when you scan to send a fax. If you make a copy and it comes out black then your scanner is bad. This is especially true as when you say that the problem goes away for a short time after turning the machine off. This allows the circuit to cool and the solder connections to shrink and make contact. As the board heats up the metal contacts expand and "open up", causing the scanner to fail.
Not a cheap fix unfortunately.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

When you send a fax, the other person only gets lines on there copy, not the paper that i faxed

Make a copy with your fax machine. If your scanner is bad you should have a similar problem making copies. The same scanner is used to make a copy as is used to scan and send a fax. If the copy comes out bad your scanner is either dirty or bad. If you can see your copy but it just has a few lines running vertically up and down the page then you need to clean the scanner glass. This is a small strip of glass in the port where you feed it your originals.

Scanner locked?

On some models there is a transport latch to lock the scanner. Look under the scanner (where the copy comes out) and you will see a green slide. Look down thgrough the scanner glass and you will see a lock/unlock symbol.

Error code 5010

I got the error code 5010 today (scanner lock switch). I called Canon. The printer's electrical circuitry (brain) needs to be refreshed. This is similar to wireless routers and other devices. They directed me as follows: 1. power OFF the printer 2. Unplug the printer's power cord from the electrical source. 3. Wait AT LEAST 1 minute - no less than 1 minute. 4. After 1 minute, plug-in the printer to the electrical source. Turn on the printer - wait for it to warm up as usual and it should be ok. Mine worked perfectly after the above steps. - Hope this helps.
