Hi when I connect my modem to my router the Internet doesn't work. But when the modem is plugged directly into the computer it works fine. My router is a DIR - 300 and my modem is a Thomson Speedtouch 530.
Ok, on the back of the router, the port that you have the network cable plugged in does it say "Wan" or "Uplink" or is it just numbered?
If it is numbered, you need to plug move the cable to the port that says "Wan" or "Uplink", this is typically one of the last ports on the back side of the router and sometimes it is actually sort of set further away from the other ports (nominally). The Wan or Uplink port is the one you would want to plug the cable you are going to use to connect the router to the modem. When you have it correctly installed, you will see a couple of lights on the front of the router that are lit up. These lights will correspond to the port you have the cables plugged into on the backside of the router. One port should say "Internet" or "Wan" or "Network" the other port (the one the cable going to your computer is plugged into) should have a number near/over/in front of the light, and the light should be lit.
Once you have the cables correctly connected, you should power cycle all 3 devices in the following order:
Shut off your computer
unplug your router
unplug your modem- now wait for a good thirty seconds just to be safe, and you can start powering things up in this order:
Plug in your router, and wait until it has finished flashing and powering up,
Then plug in your router, and wait until the light for the "Wan" or "Uplink" or "Internet" port has stopped flashing.
Now turn on your computer and log in to it. If you have followed these steps correctly it will resolve 90% of all router/modem setup problems. If this does not resolve your problem, you may have to configure the router's internal configuration with your internet provider's name and maybe even a user name and password- these instructions would be available from your Internet provider, and they should be able to provide you that information if you need it and have forgotten it/misplaced it.
I hope this helps.
Check if your DSL requires you to use a software to connect to the internet or a username and a password. I would assume that you have connected the modem to the internet port or the single port that you can see on its panel. You need to get that into the router and have it connected. With a Dlink, enter 192.168.0.1 on your browser and enter the username and password into the setup page.
