The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, the stepper motor that moves the laser is sticking on the worm gear or excessive ware on the gear linkage is preventing it from moving.
By your description it sounds like the DVD player needs to be cleaned. You can purchase a CD/DVD cleaner at most places like Walmart, Target, or Radio Shack.
Try cleaning it first. If that doesn't work, it will probably have to be repaired by a professional, if it's not under warranty.
First of all,if you are using rental dvds, there might be scratch which your dvd player might have an issue to read it;however,if you have tried many dvds in this player and you are having this issue, it is time to move on to another dvd player. I recommend a Pioneer dvd player. solutiondoct
open it and check for a broken part in one of the gears that operate the drive. if the unit is under warranty, take it back rather than try to fix it. either something is in the mechanical portion of the unit, or it is badly worn. i would suspect a broken part from the noise issue/ clicking sounds. the read head runs on a track and could be jammed up, unable to run to access the directory of the disc. inspect what you can get to, and hopefully that will be a simple fix. good luck mark
