1993 40 HP 4 cyl. Mercury outboard: Running along just a little above idle speed when the motor stops as if the switch had been turned off. Got home and checked plugs... no fire. Checked coils, ignition switch, lanyard kill switch, trigger and then stator. The stator appears to be bad as there is an open circuit between Blue-Red and Red-Engine grnd. My querry is this... does the stator only charge the battery or does it have other duties? I know the trigger is what fires the coils according to the timing adjustment but I'm not quiet sure about that stator. Could that keep the motor from cranking and running?
