Don't know how to restore files from backup done with North Ghost

What was the problem in the first place? Why are you trying to restore the computer?

Or reading wrong; do you mean the computer will not start? Boot?

Primer:
Disk Boot. -> The bootstrap files on the harddrive.
Bootstrap <- Make it easier to understand?

The basic Windows files.

Can't access restoration on the harddrive with F11? Quite common.
I mean, how crazy is that? Let's put the restoration files, (Basic Windows files), on the harddrive? So if the harddrive goes bad?????

Suggest you use the Restoration Disk.

{Pre-built computer manufacturers were packing the Restoration Disk/s with the computer. As time went by the manufacturers saw the users were not using the disk/s, or loosing them.

Didn't want to use, because of fearing computer damage if they error, or didn't even want to try.

Okay. Put the restoration files on the harddrive, then.
Have the new owner make a BACKUP, when the owner turns the computer on for the first time.
Save a few cents without providing the disk for each computer.
(Take a few cents times 50,000 computers, or more)

Hardly anyone makes a backup disk, when the computer is turned on for the first time. If the harddrive goes bad you cannot access the restoration files.

Don't have the Restoration Disk? (I won't say anything about not making a backup disk. Could be failure time with it, also)

Go to the back of the computer tower, or up on the side. Write down the Serial Number. It's in the white Service Tag. S/N = Serial Number

No the file has not been copied or backed up propertly, can you tell me which utility have you used to backup the harddrive.

If you are using "Norton Ghost" then it is similar to a standard backup/restore programme.
Open Ghost, select all of the files you require, if it is a programme that you want then you must include the Windows directory and System 32 directory as there are files the computer requires to register the programme again.
Usually Ghost is used to replace all of your data on the hard drive.
If you have additional files that you wish to keep, backup those files first, then you can add them to your recovered hard drive.

I use Norton Ghost 9 and I love it. Initially, it makes a complete image of your harddrive. I would purchase a good sized external harddrive and attach it via USB and use it as your backup drive.

Norton will allow you to schedule "incremental backups" as often as you like. I have mine set for every night at 1AM.

The biggest reason to use this system is if your C: drive fails, you can use Norton Ghost to completely restore your system from the backup image on a new harddrive and be up and running as if nothing happened within a few hours. No installing applcations, settings or anything. It's wonderful!

I work at a computer repair shop, and we use norton ghost all the time. Its very easy to use and I would definatly reccommend it. As for a backup CD, you would need an external cd or dvd burner which costs between $50-100. Another solution is to complety wipe your hard drive and install windows fresh. This would remove all the factory installed programs as well as all your data so back it up! I hope this helped you.

Ghost saved the drive information in an image file.  Whatever you named your backup you would see *.gho, *001.gho, *002.gho.  That is your whole hard drive in a spanned image file.  Ghost Explorer is what you need to open and view these images and you would be able to extract files as your would from a zip file.  There are no restore points as you would think using Windows Restore.  Only the raw hard drive information as it appears on your dive now.  I'm  not sure if Ghost Explorer is provided with the home edition as I'm used to the enterprise for my work.

Sad to say but alot of the computer manufacturers send Windows install/restore disks that are basically hardwired to the original hardware setup. The only real solution if you cannot install over your old setup would be to purchase the full version of the Windows o/s you want to install. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. I have used norton ghost to do just what you're wanting to do.
1)run ghost on a desktop pc,hook your 60gb hd to your pc as a "slave"(using adapter).
2)"clone",or"create image"of the hd to a folder (on desktop)
3)swap hd's(on desktop)
4)format new(250gb)drive as "ntfs"
5)open ghost,and do a "restore"-of the saved image folder-TO new hd,re-install new 250gig in laptop.
///YOURE done!!!
-now you will have a back-up(old hd,AND image file folder.

start menu.... programs.... look in there for the brand of computer you have or just tools.... create restore disks is what you need to do.... if you should lose your factory image or just need to restore the system and can't boot into the operating system to restore.. use them.
