Xbox360 can't play dvd game only dvd movie or cd

If it's hacked you can play movie discs, if not just if the movie is in DivX, Avi, MPG or MOV format and you play them from a SD card.

If you are trying to play music, then there could be only two problems.
1. Some DVD-RW can unintentionally trick you into thinking that they can play music, if inserted into the right machine. But really what it might really mean is that it can transport music, not play it.
2. The format of the file that you burned onto the disc may not be compatible with the type of DVD-RW that you have.

If you are trying to put an actually DVD/Movie onto the disc, then it is more than likely a format problem. I imagine that it may be really hard to get a video into the correct format so that it can be played on a DVD-RW.
I assume that whatever you are putting onto the DVD-RW is completely original. If it is not (such as a movie you got offline) then copyright laws will take all happiness out of your life.

if the system turns on but will not read a game try a dvd movie or music cd. If dvd movies dont' play and the music cd does then your laser is out of calibration. The process to calibrate it is difficult and requires more technical knowledge. It is best to take it to a service center or have someone replace the DVDROM which coudl be cheaper than paying to clean and calibrate the laser.

Yes, it can play DVD movies as well as Music CD'S and CD-R's music. You dont have to buy another machine. One tip thou when using it as a DVD plyr you might put it where ventilation can get to it - due to the overheating problem PS2 has. I use mine all the time, and I put a fan next to it, so I can play longer and watch movies longer. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Some of your games or movies may have problems playing due to 2 issues.

1.> dirty / scratched cd or dvd : Clean each cd with alcohol to clean up any smudges. If the cd / dvd is badly scratched then most electronic & music stores sell a rubbing compound that can be used to buff out mild scratches.

2.> Dirty laser head. : Music & electronic stores sell a special dvd laser cleaning kit, usually around 20$ that should do the trick.

Remember always clean your cd / dvd's before you put them into your machine and always put them back in the case.

As far as hacks go, that will void your warrenty and generally is not a good idea, most hacks are firmware changes that once made can kill the ability to play some games or worse brick your system.

if it will not play any games but will play movies ect then the laser is out of allignment and needs to be serviced.

if you can only play origional xbox games then the same applies above.

if you can not play dvd movies, xbox games then you have to check to see if the disk drive is spining if so then it the lazer assembly that needs to be replaced

If no spining then the motor hub assembly needs to be replaced.

Dependant on the age of the xbox.
Heres a couple of things to try.
1:) try a music CD.
2:) Try a laser head cleaner. ( usually the CD type ) some cleaner disks have a few small brushes on that wipe over the laser head. ** there are several causes for the 360 not reading Game-Disks**
3:) if you have the backwards compatable xex file from microsofts web-site. ( enabling you to play an official XBOX1 Or original xbox game. Try 1 of these, if the standard xbox game works, then the problem may be with the laser unit itself.
i.e standard xbox games are single layer, 360 games are dual layer. when reading a dual-layer disk the laser power output is increased, by the reader.

I needed to get the CD with the remote control in order to play songs and movies. There is a CD you buy that you can download onto your PS2 slim and afer you do this, you should be able to play movies, music, etc.....
