I've had my Nikon d40x for about 3 months now. Bought it brand new. Last night I tried taking shots using the built in flash. After the shot, I noticed a certain burning smell. It was only after a couple more shots that i realized that whenever the flash would work it was slowly melting the built in plastic light diffuser of the built in flash. Also noticed some smoke coming from the flash after the shots were taken.
What could be the problem with my camera and more importantly, how long would it take to repair something like this?

As the manual warns, never operate the camera (or any device, in general) if you notice something like that. Remove the battery, and send your camera for service
One can only guess what was the source of the problem. Did you drop the camera, expose it to high temperatures (e.g. left it inside a car in 40 degrees Celsius) or expose it to torrential rain?
In any case, how long it will take to repair it (or, more likely, replace it) depends on your local Nikon service department.

I was using a printer paper in front of the flash to redirect the flash and I heard a pop--followed by the smell that I used to get when I used a cube flash on the old 110 mm camera's.
The flash still works but I do notice a slight hint of the "bulb smell".
I bought the camera new around Thanksgiving of 2007. Do I have to have the camera repaired or can I just purchase an external flash and not use the built in?
