My XT will not connect to Vista.

I have had a Rebel XT for about a year now and all the software to download my pictures was on my old laptop, with Windows XP. I recently bought a laptop with windows Vista, and I installed all the software for my camera from the CD's (EOS Utility, Camera Window, Zoombrowser, etc) but when I attach my camera to my computer and open the EOS utility, I cannot upload any pictures to my computer, it doesn't recognize that my camera is even plugged in.

I purchased my Canon EOS 350D and used the supplied CD's to download the necessary utilities on my Windows XP notebook. When I installed MS Vista, I can't connect the camera to the notebook anymore and hence can't download pics from the camera.

  • jekyllks May 11, 2008

same problem. downloaded driver for vista & the computer doesn't recognize it. according to canon you were supposed to get past that to install anyway, but it offers no other options but essentially " ha ha you're screwed"

  • NevadaP May 27, 2008

Problem looks to be confined to those of us running 64 bit Vista. Canon needs to get cracking on this. Specifically, the WIA driver is supporting 32 bit Vista but not 64 bit. The only work around is to get an external CF card reader to download images. The 32bit apps (EOS Utility, Digital Photo Professional, Stitcher) do work. I can only hope the USB WIA driver is forthcoming.

Well, that worked perfectly. Turn on your Rebel XT camera and under Menu then Tools go to Communication and set it to Print/PTP. Thank you to all you very smart people!

Thanks!!
The Canon website does not work because Vista does not recognize the driver. However, the PTP setting does work.
Whew (it took me quite a while to get to this solution).

Try changing the communication settings on the last tab in the menu to Print/PTP. It worked for me. Vista would then recognize the camera - however it does not use any drivers from Canon for download.

PTP was the setting I needed too! With mny new Vista 64-bit PC, I spent hours trying to get the drivers installed for my Rebel XT using Canon's instruction to set the camera's Communication mode to "PC Connection." BAD ADVICE! Setting it to PTP was all I needed to do.

For Vista 64 bit OS:
* set camera to PTP as referenced in other solutions
*ALSO go into Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Autoplay and change the "Pictures" setting to "View/Download images using Canon Zoombrowser EX"
*ALSO scroll down on that same screen to Devices. Should see your device listed (mine is a Digital Rebel XT). Set this to "Import pictures using windows.

When you connect your camera, you will get a small pop-up function window "Importing Pictures and Videos". Tag the pics, if you like. Choose to erase them from the memory card if you like. Pics are available to be viewed in normal Canon ZoomBrowser software.

Better than using a card reader or clicking and dragging pics from one program to another.

Hope this helps... it keeps me from tearing my hair out.

I had the same problem and then figured it out!

- You might need to go to the canon website and install any drivers for your operating system. (Including the RAW driver)

- Next, you will need Photoshop CS or later

- Open up photoshop. Go to File > Import and you should see the Rebel XT on this list. Import images this way

The computer does this because you're not importing jpg images but RAW.

I contacted Cannon - they suggested this and it works: Set the camera to creative mode, access menu, go to last yellow tab, select communication type, set it to PTP, power off the camera, connect it to the PC and power it on. The camera will now be recognized as external storage and you can download your pictures

I had same problem. I tried the Canon customer support and got similar advice Muhammed gave, along with several additional steps to try. None of them worked. The only thing that worked was the above suggestion of setting the camera itself to the PTP for the communication setting of the menu.

It's too bad you have do do this work around, it does not allow for the same level of control as the pc communication setting.

You can set the Camera to PTP comms in its menu window then Vista 64 will work apart from Camera remote control....

PTP worked! Thanks!

Any suggestions for Vista 64-bit? I tried the Vista driver on the link offered by Mohammed and it did not work. Said to check the environment for suitability.

I was having the same issue that everyone else is having. The Tech from Canon was trying to help the best that he/she could. While I was reading the step-by-step instructions from the Tech. I decided to plug in the camera, go to my computer, double click on the camera under folders. You will see removable storage, a folder DCIM and then a list of canon folders (123Canon, 124Canon, 125Canon, 126Canon, 127Canon).
Click on each one (or if you know how you took your pictures) until you find your pictures. Go to Edit, select the pictures you want to copy, click on edit again and select copy to folder. At this point you have the opportunity to create/name a file folder for your pictures. Good luck.

Bet you have Vista on your new computer. If so, it's a Windows Vista issue. Go to Canon's website and get and install the updated drivers for your camera. Here's the link (select Drivers and Download, then select Windows Vista, then look for, download, and install the driver for Windows Vista.

Download pictures from my Rebel EOS to my computer

Take a look at Picasa, from Google. Also take a look at Irfanview. I haven't used Irfanview in over a year (since I moved from a PC to a Mac - it's the one piece of software I really miss on my Mac), but before I moved to the Mac it was my primary photo organizer and viewer. It's a very impressive program for free software from an individual programmer (Irfan).

C-150 OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You need to install the correct software on your computer. They are usually called drivers. Here is a link to the Canon Rebel Xt page from Canon with all sorts of goodies you can download. The most important section to get things going for you is the drivers. Select your OS from the drop down list, download and install. If you don't have drivers your PC or Mac doesnt recognize the fine piece of hardware... your camera. Hit me up if you're still stuck.

Downloading pictures

Yes, you need a driver so that your operating system understands how to interface to your camera. Canon Europe has a handy web page:

http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010192.asp

Enter your operating system and language, and you will get the choices of things that can be downloaded relevant to your camera. If you were using Windows Vista, for example, your choice would be "Canon Camera USB WIA Driver for Windows Vista". Install that, reboot, and then connect your camera again. It should be recognized by your computer.

My XT will not connect to Vista.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa.
