Connecting my westell 6100 modem to my router

Hey, my problem is that my modem (Westell 6100 Dsl) won't connect with my router (Linksys Wireless G WRK54G) or that's the best solution i can come up with. i connect the modem to the router using an ethernet cable (i'm using the internet labeled ports on both) then i use one of the other 3 slots on the router to connect to my computer using another ethernet cable...so after that i try to connect to the internet and i have no connection i've tried using the set-up disk that came with the router but it has to test the internet connection and i have none, but when i plug my modem directly to the computer the internet works fine.If it helps my ISP is verizon. any suggestion? thanks

Same identical problem. With my set up. I tried a new Lynksys router and had the same problem.

  • slimkid Mar 05, 2008

While trying to intergrate my Linksys wireless router into my network, I am unable to get my router to communicate with my Westell 6100 modem. I can reach the internet just fine when my PC is connected via ethernet directly to the Westell 6100 modem. I have also already run the set-up disk for the router and am able to log into the router and even connect to it wirelessly, however once I place it inbetween my computer and my modem (via ethernet) I am unable to communicate with the internet (or the modem). I have changed the configuration of the router to reflevt the use of PPOE and entered the network username and password for my verizon account with no luck.

I had a similar problem with Westell 6100 modem/Netgear WR614 router running through BellSouth DSL. The router was not getting an IP address. I had to login to the modem and change it from PPPoE to bridge. I understand the 6100 acts as a router otherwise.

Don't forget to "bridge" your modem before selecting PPPoE on your modem/router. Call your ISP to bridge your modem.

On the setup page of the router, change the "internet connection type". Change it from "Automatic Configuration-DHCP" to "PPPoE" and then enter your username and password you used when signing up for verizon. GOOD TO GO !!!

According to your current problem , it seems that your router has to be configured properly, as you say that you are able to go online with your modem..the possible option is you need to change cthe ipaddress of your router, try, http://kb.linksys.com,
or call linksys 1800 5465797 and the tech at the other end would assist you in a step by step procedure..

SOURCE: connecting a laptop.

on connecting your laptop wirelessly, it is best if you set the router to have wireless security first.

accessing the router's setup page:

open IE, then type http://192.168.1.1 on your address bar, it will ask you for a username and password, thats both admin (these steps will depend if you have changed the settings on the router)

once opened, go to the wireless tab, change your Wireless Network Name (SSID) to something esle instead of Linskys, like your name perhaps. then set the channel to 11ghz and hit save settings.

now look for a Wireless Security SUBTAB, enable to wireless security, under security mode select WPA-Personal (PSK) set your algorithm to TKIP and make up a password on the blank space that says Passphrase / Pre Shared Key , that will be you wireless security code. now hit save settings.

in connecting your wireless laptop, make sure the wireless adapter on the device is enabled and it will automatically locate the wireless network and wil ask you for the security code, once you place it, you will get connection.

DSL line disconnects on WRT54GS only

Try to change the LAN IP address of your router to 192.168.2.1 by accessing the router's Setup page. You also need to set your Westell modem to "full-bridge mode". You need to ask assistance from your ISP to bridge the modem. After that, set-up the Linksys router to PPPoE then power cycle it.

Need to redo wireless setup betw linksys & westell

You will need to assign a different ip address to the Westell modem - I am assuming that both the router & modem are using the same ip address 192.168.1.1? If that is the case, then assign 192.168.1.2 to the modem.

Setup Wireless Router to Westell 6100 modem

Your Wireless router should have come with a CD. Insert the CD into your computer and follow it step by step. If it did not come with it here is a basic wiring setup.
From wall jack to Westell modem, From modem to uplink port on Max G router.
Reboot Westell modem. T
Everything should auto-configure unless you need a username and password for your DLS. If so you will need to program this into your router.

Get no connection useing 6100 modem connected to wireless B router

Hi starman re westell 6100.

Hi i hope you have find solution with your issue ifnot let me walk you through on how to get it up and working.

First , you need to connect your modem directly to your computer. We need to access its Graphic Unit Interface by opening your browser and type onyour address bar its default gateway.

The def. gateway can be 192.168.1.1 or depending what ISP youre connected to . For ATT broadband its 192.168.1.254 / verizon broadband is 192.168.1.1..  { onyour address bar : type in 192.168.1.1 and hit Enter.

to check def gateway : you can go to start > run > cmd then enter > on DOS command type in ipconfig /all  then HIT enter > itl provide you your network list > your default gateway is your westell modem or if your linksys is connected than it should be you linksys.

Itl route you to your westell page. Try to go to  Broadband and choose connection or configure connection.button. Look for configure and by default you will see its in PPPoE> change it to bridged ethernet and save.

By enabling bridge to your modem w/c is westell youl have a chance to configure you linksys to PPPoE.

Connect you westell to your linksys and on your computer try to check your default gateway as seen above. By default linksys can be access by typing in 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1. Itl prompt you for UN and PW: by default your Username is : Blank and Password should be admin. { blank = dont type anything}

On your linksys SETUP page > by default it is set to DHCP or obtain IP address automatically. Pls change it to PPPoE and type in your UN and PW : username@isp { your ISP name}. and hit save settings or save.

Restart your linksys and try to browse to check fore connection.

========================
For all types of modem such as westell : you need to set it to bridge mode first foryou wireless router to work ie linksys. Set linksys to PPPoE .. that should work .

For more detailed steps or questions re: this issue pls dont hestiate contact me. Best wishes.

Pls enable you Wireless Encryption for your home network security.

Ciao .

Connect to wireless D-Link and Westell6100

I am assuming that you have a functional LAN cable connecting the Westell and the DI 524, right? If you are unsure, replace it with a cable you know is good.

If the 524 is turned on downstream of the Westell modem, it should find what it wants. You may try rebooting the Westell and seeing if the 524 finds it, and you maybe should reboot the 524.

Sometimes, when the world gets jiggered up I have to work pretty hard to get my DI-524 resync'd to my DSL modem.
