I had the same problem on my CQ60. HP battery test showed one or more cells not working. After spending about 2 hours talking to some guy in India,or somewhere, he came to the conclusion that my battery was bad. HP sent me a new battery, which fixed the problem.

Your adapter requires replacement if still in warranty. If you are keen on fixing it, easy way is - replace the wire that connects adapter to laptop, or if you are super handy with soldering - remove the plastic on connector- it will be unusable plastic cover after this removal. You will see that the white wire has connection broken. Desolder the old bit of solder on wire. Put new solder to connect back to its pole. Now plug in the connector to your laptop charging port. Voila! Your battery is plugged in and charging.

Lots of "fake" batteries in market. These are bad ones shipped by clever vendors who buy factory rejects and sell then at discounted price. Better to buy battery from original manufacturer of the Laprop.

The problem could also be the power cord. A friend of mine was complaining her HP CQ60 wouldn't charge unless she jiggled the plug connection at the laptop. She thought it was the battery and ordered another one but found it was still not charging correctly. I looked at it and confirmed that the cord had one loose connection at the barrel plug.

If it is the power cord you could purchase a new one or repair it like I did below:

The cord can be fixed by slicing a concentric circle around the plug about a 1/2 inch down from the rubber end and then peeling it off to expose the two wires. I found one wire broken from the solder joint and thus not getting a good connection. I drilled a small hole into the metal barrel to make a better contact and then re-soldered the wire into the hole. I then super glued the concentric section I sliced off and then put a piece of 1/2" 2:1 heat shrink tubing ($1.25 on eBay) around it and shrank it around the repair. It's fixed and due to the black heat shrink tubing, you can barely tell it was repaired. Hope this helps!

Cable from AC adapter to PC is damaged or solder junctions of DC-In connector on the motherboard is cracked, or faulty DC-In connector. Is Power LED on the laptop is on as well as LED on adapter when battery is NOT charging?

You need to replace your old battery. Don't over charged your battery. If you are using your laptop in your house it is better not to use it with battery. Just use the power adaptor/supply only. Then make sure you will drain the battery let say once a week. =)

Battery problem with HP Compaq Presario V2000 laptop

When batteries fail, they usually lose the cells inside them, which means that the cell is no longer able to function as a holding cell for power and therefore cannot do its job anymore, when a battery fails to hold and refuses charging it is bad and needs to be recycled. The flashing is telling you to purchase a new battery. The larger the number of cells in the battery, the longer and better it will perfrom,,RE: 6 cell, 9 cell, 12 cell.

Battery does not charge

Will the old battery (that you are replacing) charge up at all? If the old battery charges but the new battery will not, then it's likely a bad replacement battery.

To rule out the possibility of a corrupted battery meter inside of windows, you may wish to leave the laptop on battery power only, until it dies. A 5% charge will usually only grant you about 20 minutes of laptop life maximum. Since you left it charging all night, you should get a few hours of life before it dies. If you get a few hours of life, the battery meter software is corrupted.

Most likely though, the replacement battery is bad.

Compaq presario shut down while plugged in

Greetings my friend, regarding on your problem try to remove your battery then clean it and after you clean insert it back. then used the power connector and insert it in the DC plug and wait for 5 - 10 mins before you turn on your laptop. In that way the battery is already charging then try also to touch the battery of the laptop if it is charging or not by touching the battery and when it warms meaning it charge otherwise it is not charging. Then if your findings are true that your battery are not charging then try to test it with tester so that you check the status of your battery.

Problem with power, plugged in, not charging

For just such occasions, I recommend that everyone have a low-cost multimeter at home. They are versatile and give you the features for measuring AC/DC voltage (which is what you need), resistance and a few current ranges.  They cost less than $20 US at Radio Shack or auto parts stores or if near a Harbor Freight Tool store, underr $10 US.
You need to verify if you have any voltage from your adapter/charger and whether the battery pack is still intact (they have thermal fuses inside).
The meters come with an adequate Chinglish basic instruction sheet and leads and battery.
