I've just had to do this. Somewhat annoying and I'm sure there must be a quicker way. Let me know if you find one.

Firstly you need ArcGIS or something that can create .shp files. Load the Excel file into this. In Arc you need to right click the table and display the x y data (just to make sure it's all okay). Then save as a layer. The sd card must have corrupted.Or the socket in which sd card is got installed is dusty or moisture collected there. Also try checking with another spare sd car and see if that is getting detected and reading. If its getting detected, then your sd card is corrupted. But if other sd card is also not getting detected. Then its gps module problem, where sd card is fitted.Try the reset and see if helps.Turn off the gps for few minutes then remove the battery then insert battery and on it . ---------- also you can try restore factory defaults.Click menu in that select default and after then press enter. Then see.----------- --------------- this should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

I suggest you try resetting the device by following the instructions in the owner's manual. If the issue persists, it may be due to an error in the map database. You can try reinstalling the maps to the memory card after unlocking them for your device. If you are still experiencing issues, please contact Garmin Product Support for further assistance .

How to Upgrade and Fix your Garmin GPSMAP 545s System Software

5376f19.jpg

a2bb618.jpg

Does your Garmin GPSMAP 545s freeze up?
Is the screen stuck, or do you loose satellite coverage?

I recommend upgrading the system software of your Garmin 545s. There may not be physical damage to your unit, and it may be completely revitalized by replacing the GPSMAP software with the latest version 5.30 (as of January 7, 2010).

 1. Click on "Download" and choose to save the file to your computer.
 2. Choose a location where you can easily find the file, such as the 'My Documents' folder or 'C:\'.
 3. Once the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the file.
 4. Double-click on the downloaded file. This will automatically extract the files to C:\Garmin and run a program to transfer the software update to an SD card.
 5. Load the SD card into your GPSMAP 545s and turn it on to replace the system software of your unit.
I hope that helps.

Where do I find a 6 pin serial to usb adapter for the Garmin 421s? I can't find one anywhere on line. Does Garmin sell one? It's Saturday and Garmin's help center is closed. Their on line...

Hello,

The 6 pin DIN plug found on the GPSMAP 421s data/power cable (Garmin part number 010-10918-00) is used for the sonar input.

Data transfer from the GPSMAP 421s is easily transferred by memory card.
Information about data transfer on the 421s is at about 50 seconds into this video.
http://www.youtube.com/gpscity#p/search/6/8ddIgvCAUmI

Real time NMEA data can be transferred using Garmin part number 010-10918-00 wired to a DB-9 serial connector (Instructions are on the cable).

It then can be adapted to USB using a serial to USB adapter.

Can the Garmin GPS 78s be charged in the car? Also, what is the best car holder available? Thank you.

Hello,

You can purchase 12v power cords for your unit but they will not charge the units batteries. The cord will only provide power to keep the unit on. But here is a link http://www.gpscity.ca/garmin-cigarette-lighter-adapter.html.
