When the seal starts to fail, this oil floats up into the wash water in the form of small black drops. The stains are almost impossible to remove from clothing. Also, as the oil is leaking up, hot soapy water is leaking down into the transmission, which will eventually cause it to fail.
The seal wont be difficult to replace, but to get access to it you have to basically disassemble the whole machine. The hardest part was pulling the agitator off the shaft - I use a slide hammer puller. I'd start by pulling the agitator off and see if you can access the transmission seal that way - perhaps yours will be easier than mine was.
Check that the dispenser is clean, it may be gunged up with black gunge, use soda crystals and put machine on hottest wash. If all is clean it could be down to seal gone in drum letting grease into system. Good luck, let me know how it goes.

Remove agitator cap. Remove bolt underneath. lift off upper agitator and lower. Look for grease under agitator and on splined shaft and clean. Re-assemble be sure to put plastic thrust piece in between upper and lower agitator.
I have been getting brown stains in the shape of a line on items of clothing washed in my Whirlpool duet washer. I can not get these stains out with anything and they are ruining numerous items of clothing. I have no idea what is causing them - I have manually cleaned the inside of the washer. same thing here. I have been having this problem for a few weeks, cant wash anything white without ruining it.
You said, you have been getting oil stains on some of my clothes. this means your washer has a leaking seal and oils is coming out onto your clothe. Water is getting into the seal and bearings. Do not waste any time. Get service out there right away. If this is caught early you may have a chance to save a lot of money!

Due usually to much detergent in each load, use smaller amounts. To much detergent degrades the rubber seals and gaskets and rubber seal also in some front loaders around the door too!
Over the life of a front loading washer the seal/gasket degrades largely due to the chemicals in the detergent as well as bleach.
Most gaskets/seals get hard and brittle therefore the over the life of a front loading washer the seal/gasket degrades largely due to the chemicals in the detergent as well as bleach.
with the exeption of something you mistakenly left in your clothing and wound up in the washer, not likely stains are from there , most of the time they do come from the dryer, try grabbin an old white rag nad runnig it around hte fron of hte dryer drum and then tyr the rear where the drum meets the back bulkhead. usually leavs brownish streks smome what curved 2-3 inches log. its from hte felt hte supposed to seal the drum. its either wearing thin, or a glide has worn away causing the issue
Laundry soap dyes are usually more difficult to remove than other colors.² However, oxygen bleach, such as Oxi-Clean, can sometimes clean away even the red stains. Sprinkle the powder on a damp sponge and scrub away the stain.
Soak a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and wipe away the detergent stain. If the stain is not immediately lifted, allow the alcohol to soak for several minutes.
Vinegar is effective on many kinds of stains. Make a solution of one part vinegar in two parts water and sponge the vinegar onto the stain.
Baking soda can be effective for removing detergents from appliance surfaces. Sprinkle baking soda on a damp sponge and clean the stain until removed.
Combine equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide with water and sponge the stain with the solution.
Soak a cloth with acetone nail polish remover and use it to wipe off the stain. If the stain does not wipe off right away, it may help to lay the cloth over the stain to soak for a few minutes.
As a last resort, wipe paint thinner on the stain. Paint thinner can remove most dye stains. However, you may want to test this on a small, hidden area first to be sure the paint thinner won't damage the lacquer on the appliance or cause any other adverse effects.
Once you have removed the stain, wash the area with soapy water to remove any residue from the cleaning solution.
