Your backlight inverter board is likely bad. If you're handy it is relatively easy to replace. Google for replacement part.
if you can see a picture while shining a flashlight on the screen then it is most likely the inverter board. Backlights provide the light through the lcd screen for brightness.
SOURCE: No picture, sound ok
I have a similar issue. Sometimes the entire screen goes black and sometimes only one-half - either the top or bottom half goes black. The only solution we have found is to gently tap the TV (usually the front side) and the picture will come back for awhile. It almost seems heat related as it only goes out after the first 10 minutes of use. There must be a fix to this.

These sets have capacitor problems in there power supplies. These capacitors will leak and cause voltages to fluctuate. Have a repair shop check it out.
SOURCE: LG 50inch Plasma received loud sound then went black
My friend's LG 50" plasma tv has the same problem and it cannot light up. The picture and sound are working fine. But the brightness is too low. It is purchased 2006 too and out of warranty. So I opeend up and found 9 capacitors 3300uF 10V on the power module at the middle of TV are popped. I am planing to replace all of them. They are available at digikey.com. I think this model's power module has design flaw. The cap rating may to low. 10V? Stay tune to see what happen after I change the all the caps.

Just do a hard reset to this set and check. To make it a hard reset, unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If this do not help you, the main board to your TV is faulty. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Viewing it in "Mosaic" will make surf easy.
