Hi Michael, check inside your NAD C542, there are 4 fuses, check that none is open, if all are well, you could have problems with the capacitors in the area of the power supply or in the case of the Transformer
If you do not have technical capabilities to evaluate the above, consult a specialized technical service
I hope you can solve the problem

SOURCE: Pressing the 'open' button on my NAD C542 CD

G'Day Michael,

Having fixed thousands of CD players in my career, and also being a NAD Authorised service guy from 1989 till recent times, I can comment with some authority to your situation, and correct some of the ill found assumptions given to you already.

This unit uses a KSS213c transport. Very common and used in many machines, also relatively reliable.

2a8af3a.jpg
The drawer load motor is not shown above. Is will be mounted on the black plastic load assembly. The drive belt/motor for it will be under the tray runners.
If you do not hear the motor run, then it WILL NOT be a broken or failing belt. However, this is the most common problem with this style of transport. I would be checking anyway to see, the load motors do free run fairly quiet with no drive belt connected. Wind the tray assembly out by hand by kicking the gears over to open the draw to see the belt/motor

Because you cannot get it to work from the remote, AND you have "open" indicator on the front panel, it WILL NOT be a faulty front panel button(never seen one fail ever!)

I have never replaced a load motor to a Sony transport. Spindle motors can be a problem, but they never stop working altogether.

I would be checking the tray mechanics, a jam caused by something fouling the gears may cause a fail. Tap the front of the draw as you press eject to see if you can encourage it to work.
Sometimes, small nylon drive pinions can split, the excessive gap in the gears caused by the split causing a bind. Check also for blown pico fuses in the servo drive stage. This will cause no drive to the load motor.
If you cannot pin down the source of the problem, the player IS welll worth repair. These machines sound great and would have cost you a few bucks to begin with. If you need help locating an expert NAD authorised repair guy I can help.

Happy to discuss any of this further with you. As previously direct your comment to me by name. Cheers

regards
robotek

SOURCE: my Nad C542 stop read

Hello,

how long have you been using this player? I suspect the laser (lens) of the player. I think the laser (lens) is weak that's why it cannot read data/files on CD's effectively. That's why it stops reading.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the player's cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new one.

To replace the lens, remove the bad laser, use it as a sample to get exactly the same type and do the replacement. Note that replacing a laser (lens) needs a professional touch, so if you cannot replace the laser, get it to a repairman to fix it for you.

Good luck.

Once this us done, your player will play all DVD discs again.

Good luck.

SOURCE: Nad C542 Troubleshooting

found same problem with mine, solution .. place clean paper over the optic, then a magnet, leave for a few seconds, the build up of static causes a magnetic field in the optic preventing it tracking, have cured a few other brands with this as well .. shows manufactures are putting inferior parts in to their players, hope this helps !!

Vfl display not working

no display could be a problem with the inverter circuit that drives the display

usually a transistor goes bad around the display area

check the board for dry solder joints as well

sme CD players have an option to switch off the display, check its not turned off

usually a button on the unit or the remote

My NAD cd player CD slot goes in and then opens...it does not retain the CD inside to play...

Hello
This fault is due to loose tray loading belt or weak loading motor. You just change the loading belt with same type. Never use a belt more than tight. Use the same size. If belt changing does not help, replace the loading motor. OK.

My NAD C 541 cd player will not play any discs. I open it put the disc in and it tries to scan and then rejects the disc and opens on its' own. There is the word 'over' in red below the track number...

It could be the belt for the tray mechanism. Tray closes then motor is pushed up to CD. If belt slips or physical mechanism is sticky CD will not spin and tray will reopen.

Nad plays for a minute or so...

First thing to do is to check all your new caps and their polarities.
