Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

TV suddenly lost colour - gone black and white Virgin Media.

I turned my tv on this afternoon and found all my virgin media channels are black and white.
If I turn on the tv without the virgin media box I get hazy/fuzzy pictures from analogue tv which are mostly black and white but do have colour sometimes/on some channels.
I'm not sure if the problem is the tv (a panasonic) or the virgin media (supplied via fibre optic cable).
At first I thought it was the Virgin as the tv screen is obviously still able to play in colour on the analogue (not all the time but we don't have an aerial plugged in for this due to using the cable tv service so that could be why on the analogue?).
I rang Virgin who told me to turn everything off, unplug the scart leads and blow into them then plug back in and turn back on. They said they were sending a signal to my box. This made no difference so the woman said to try again in half an hour and call them back to book an engineer if not....
As we work every day it's nearly impossible to find a time someone can be in if we book an engineer so I'm hoping someone has a suggestion?

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I've just had a look and neither the television nor the virgin box has one of those little reset buttons.
I don't know what model the tv is as it's an old(ish) model that my parents didn't want anymore.
I think it is a flat screen but not the fancy flat wall mountable ones - it still has the big sticky out back if that makes sense?

Most likely the problem is due to a "lock up" you need to reset the system, unplug the set, and look in the back panel (I am assuming it is a digital (flat screen tv?) for a small (usuall) red nipple, again making sure the power is unplugged, depress the nipple with a bll point pen for about 5 seconds, wait a few minuets, and plug the set back in, you will most likely need to go to your menu for set up again, but you will be starting with a clean slate (so to sleak) and the tuner should then correctly pass the signal though

My TV will not stop switching itself off

Hi, The first thing to do is troubleshoot your TV independent to any other service provider that has a box that probably connects to your TV via a HDMI cable or old version scart.

Simply turn off your TV and turn off the socket that the TV is plugged in for 20 mins. Also turn of any Virgin media boxes.

After 20 mins turn on the TV. Do not worry if you get a message saying no signal detected. Wait and see if the TV stays on with no messages such as auto-standby. If the TV remains on with no problems then turn on your Virgin Media Box. The box will need to initialise ( about 30 seconds ) and then the TV should recognise the HDMI signal and you will see the Virgin TV.

If your TV turns off at any point during this process you have a fault with the TV, If when you turn on the Virgin box and no signal is detected you have either a cable connection problem or a Virgin Box problem, so using your TV REMOTE turn your TV back to ARIEL input to receive the normal television broadcasts via your Ariel that give you the normal freeview television that all modern TV's can receive, if you can get the normal reception contact virgin support who will troubleshoot your problem.

Does any universal remote work on any tv? I have a Sonique tv with no remote?

The universal remote must have a code in its library that will enable some or all functions of your Sonique TV. Not all universal remotes have the necessary code.

Tv connected via scart cables through dvd and virgin media box. Picture sometimes goes yellow the flickers then back to clear.Other times it can go red. Plays dvd's okay though. Is this a connection...

Hi there,
This will be a problem with either the Scart leads (9 times out of 10) or the virgin media box. Not a problem with the signal coming from Virgin Media. Try checking the scart leads are not loose, or looped through the wrong way.
Hope this helps

TELEVISON MODEL:SAMSUNG LE32B450C4W my gran just recieved this tv today she also use virgin media digital on tuning in the television i noticed i could not find digital tv and that i had to go through...

In short: No.

Virgin Media is received via an external box and there is no way to simply program the tv so that your gran can just press one number.

There is a complicated way, but it would be even more confusing. Some Virgin boxes have an RF (i.e. regular tv aerial) output in addition to the usual Scart output. The RF output can be tuned into a regular terrestrial channel, but reception quality is poor compared to using the Scart. Your gran will have to remember to ensure the tv is set to terrestrial reception and to use the source button and ext when she wants to go back to Virgin. This also will not work when the tv uses it's own inbuilt digital Freeview receiver so it's both confusing and useless after the digital switchover.

Either leave the TV permanently set to ext and tell your gran to only ever use the Virgin remote to change channels, or be patient with her as she takes time to learn how to select between terrestrial, Freeview and Virgin.

It's less than ideal and when I worked for a tv rental company this kind of complication was a major pain for older customers (and younger non tech savvy ones!)

It may also be worth looking for a simplified universal remote control with clear buttons. There is one which has large buttons but the controller is almost the size of a sheet of A4 paper.
