This is a 50 gal gas water heater. Control valve/Thermostat was throughing a 5 light error which indicated a sensor failure. Manual said to replace. I did. And, the brand new control valve/Thermostat is throwing the same error after it started heating up for 30 mins or so. What the heck. Help please

Whirlpool sold the AO Smith brand flue damper, and the atmospheric models ... both models have different honeywell gas controls...
Error codes, service manuals and troubleshoot appear following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#honeywell

There is no specific service manual available for the flue damper series in 2019

SOURCE: How to install a new temp sensor Whirlpool electric water heater

The instructions for installing the sensor will probably included with the new part. Also, when you receive the part and actually see it, you will probably know where it will go. Sometimes, things like this happen even with new units. I have had bad thermocouples on brand new units right from the factory. It happens and unfortunately it happens to us sometimes. Good luck and if you get the part and still have trouble, contact them again. If you would have bought a GE (Rheem) unit, they would have sent a tech out to your house at no cost. I'm not a fan of Whirlpool water heaters.

SOURCE: ECO failure. Replaced the gas control thermostat & vapor sensor

It sounds like your gas/air mixture needs to be adjusted. The flame should have just the slightest amount of white, at the very tip. The rest should be evenly blue. There is an air vent adjustment in the line to the burner, right after the gas input.

SOURCE: I have a 6 gallon

Your on right track. When this happens and small flame still there, pull wire(s) off at gas valve, or test for voltage from ECO to gas valve. No voltage, then there should be no gas. Change gas valve.

Testimonial: "Changed the gas valve, now heater works as it should, No fumes and no flame after shutoff."

Whirlpool is made by American water heater.
Gas valve is made by Honeywell.
Whirlpool electronic control is version of Honeywell 'Icon' gas valve: There are several versions of this gas valve.

SOURCE: I need the basics for replacing a thermostat on a water heater...Bradford/White brand, model M250S6DS2 50 Gal, 4500 watt per element 240 voltage 50/60 hz. It keeps over heating even at lowest setting

Copy following link for replacing thermostat.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html
Suggest you might also want to test the elements while power is turned off, just in case the problem is element shorted to ground across metal tank to ground wire.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-element.html

At least you know the 240volt power to water heater and the circuit breaker are good.

Whirlpool 6th sense natural gas water heater 50 gal. Bought brand new today. Upon installation, discover low gas pressure running to unit. Turned out that gas line had under ground leak so had to turn...

1) Be careful before you Call Whirlpool 1-877-817-6750.
Be careful what you report so not to void warranty because installation protocol was not followed. Whirlpool will cover gas control valve, and possibly the installation of valve which takes about 15 minutes and does not require emptying water heater.
************So make sure you report installation that is consistent with installation shown in manual.

2) Whirlpool will also answer this same question later today with invitation to contact them.

3) Copy following link to identify gas control valve, and download service manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent

4) If dirt or debris gets into gas control valve, it will cause it not to work. Such as broken gas line. Debris can enter gas line.
Or if too much pipe dope was used on gas connection, or stray teflon tape got into line and then into valve, or end of pipe got dirty during installation, and then dirt got into gas control.
Take off gas line and use vacuum cleaner to see if something can be removed by suction. Clean up the joints.

5) It appears you have ordinary Honeywell gas control valve on atmospheric vented water heater with 9 year parts-labor warranty..
Unknown error code, so it is hard to look up solution in service manual.
Add a comment if you want expert to look up error code in service manual.

My whirlpool 50 gal natural gas water heater wont stay lit?

Are you sure the pilot is heating up the thermocouple? Make sure the flame is close enough to the thermocouple. Also make sure the thermocouple is seated properly in control valve. Try unscrewing and resetting it back into place.

Hi i have a atwood 22.7 litre water heater model mpd93754 . IT ignites heats water, but wont shut off when it gets too hot. could you please help solve this problem . many thanks rod baker.

Gas control valve thermostat might be bad.
The copper cylinder located on back of gas control that sticks into water is the thermostat.
If thermostat is not reading correct temperature, then gas might stay lit.
Usually the gas control will sense overheated water and trip the ECO so no gas will flow to burner.
In any case, the gas control valve is replaced.

Automatic restart is not working. Seems to keep saying eco problem...I thinl...the code is four flashes followed by two flashes.

Gas control valve is not identified, so error code is not known.
ECO means energy cut off.
Energy cut off happens when gas control valve thermostat has gone bad, or when gas control senses runaway heating inside combustion chamber.
Newer heaters have resettable ECO for combustion overheat. This reset is typically located on combustion chamber door and is round and has two wires that connect back to gas control. Generally you have to clean combustion chamber and tubes and catch up on maintenance, then reset ECO, then fire up heater again to see if problem is resolved.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html#troubleshoot
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Typical-gas-valve-500.jpg

Newer heater does not have reset for bad thermostat, and in that case you replace gas control valve thermostat.
Older heater does not have reset, and combustion chamber and parts are cleaned, and gas control valve thermostat is replaced.
Your manual is best place to start troubleshoot.

I have a model 6G40PVW-40F water heater and we have no hot water... the thermostat light on warm/vacation is on and so are 2 other lights...If I diconnect it and re-connect it then it will start..the gas...

Most gas water heater problems today can be solved with yearly maintenance that includes cleaning burner parts, clean air intake, check venting, check electrical connections, bleed gas line, and check gas pressure.
Gas water heater manuals recommend yearly maintenance by service technician.

In past years, gas water heaters required less maintenance, but they were less energy efficient and more dangerous to operate.

Sounds like you have Intellivent gas control valve thermostat.
Open following link to identify gas valve and see error codes:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Intelli-vent-gas-valve2.pdf
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-temperature-on-water-heater.html#intelli

Error light on vacation + 2 other lights = 3 possible conditions:
1) Wiring error: check outlet with circuit analyzer:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Typical-circuit-analyzer-15.jpg
2) Pressure switch tubing not connected, air intake obstructed (clean intake), or vent exhaust obstructed (check for proper venting).
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Test-water-heater-vent-400.jpg
3) System in lockout: Low gas pressure, hot surface igniter not positioned correctly.

You can do some of this yourself.
