This is a 50 gal gas water heater. Control valve/Thermostat was throughing a 5 light error which indicated a sensor failure. Manual said to replace. I did. And, the brand new control valve/Thermostat is throwing the same error after it started heating up for 30 mins or so. What the heck. Help please
Whirlpool sold the AO Smith brand flue damper, and the atmospheric models ... both models have different honeywell gas controls...
Error codes, service manuals and troubleshoot appear following link:

There is no specific service manual available for the flue damper series in 2019

The instructions for installing the sensor will probably included with the new part. Also, when you receive the part and actually see it, you will probably know where it will go. Sometimes, things like this happen even with new units. I have had bad thermocouples on brand new units right from the factory. It happens and unfortunately it happens to us sometimes. Good luck and if you get the part and still have trouble, contact them again. If you would have bought a GE (Rheem) unit, they would have sent a tech out to your house at no cost. I'm not a fan of Whirlpool water heaters.

It sounds like your gas/air mixture needs to be adjusted. The flame should have just the slightest amount of white, at the very tip. The rest should be evenly blue. There is an air vent adjustment in the line to the burner, right after the gas input.

Your on right track. When this happens and small flame still there, pull wire(s) off at gas valve, or test for voltage from ECO to gas valve. No voltage, then there should be no gas. Change gas valve.
Testimonial: "Changed the gas valve, now heater works as it should, No fumes and no flame after shutoff."

Suggest you might also want to test the elements while power is turned off, just in case the problem is element shorted to ground across metal tank to ground wire.

At least you know the 240volt power to water heater and the circuit breaker are good.
