The calculator works when not in print mode. Pressing the paper feed button feeds the roll and prints a random symbol.
If I switch the print on, a left arrow appears on the display and the keyboard is locked (except paper feed). I get the same if the prting switch in on when power is turned on.
The manual lists the left arrow as an error indication for divide by zero, etc. but that hardly the issue if it comes up as soon as the calculator is turned on.
I have the exact same problem (just happended recently) with my TI-5045 II after 25 years of good service. My solution? I just bought another model: Sharp EL-1801V at Stapels for about $31.00. To get the old one fixed will probably cost me $25.00-30.00 just to diagnose, plus shipping and parts and labor. And that assumes I can find a shop to do it, or that TI still stocks the part(s) gone bad. Same old problem with all technology.
