I hope someone can help me with this. I bought a Brother MFC-240C inkjet printer opened the box and followed the setup instructions to the letter. I get to where it cleans the ink tube system, the cleaning cycle finishs and it prints a quality check page. All the 4 color blocks look perfect on the printout so the LCD asks is quality ok I hit yes then I get the error message init. unable AF on the LCD. It says to check troubleshooting in manual I do and all it says is the machine has a mechanical problem or theres a foreign object in the machine such as a clip. I open scanner cover and see nothing wrong. I also turned off waited 5 minutes then repowered. When I do I get this grinding sound for about 10 seconds then the same error message. Any help anyone can give me I would be grateful. Sorry for the long winded explanation but I wanted to explain as best I could the problem
My scanner and printer model MFC-J245 "imposible inicio AF" HELPme please!!!!!
Sure. No prob.
Open scanner cover as you would do to check for a paper jammed sheet.
Do open the plastic which runs from middle to the right side (looks like a "Z" turned clockwise). Use a small screw diver for that. beneath you will find th flat cable of the scanner. You have to reconnect the flat cable by simply sticking it into position onto the main circuit board. make sure flat cable is in good position and click the" Z "onto the channel. Close cover then power up and do what ever you want to do with your mfc ;-)
This is quite normal, because the scanner moves each time for self adjustment when powering up.
So if you have checked the flat cable and it is OK, you have to dismantle the scanner and check the transport belt and the belt drive. Sometimes the contact wont come up to give the scanner the stop info.

Its the belt you have discribed. And have a look at the gear wheels and dirve engine. There might be cable loose, too.

Thanks for trying to help but I did what you suggested and it's still doing the same thing. The flat cable was firmly attached to the circuit board, I made sure of it. Is there any other suggestions you can give me. Thanks again
If this is helpful I just noticed that when I have the scanner lid picked up and watch the scanner light it moves about 4 inchs across the scanner then goes back and then it starts the grinding sound.
Sorry to be such a nuisance but before I dismantle the scanner it would help me to know what I am looking at. When I look down thru the scanner glass there is a belt that goes from one side to the other and it is connected. On one side there is 3 gears, I figured out the grinding sound is the 3 gears going really fast when I turn the scanner on. Should I be seeing another belt cause you mentioned a transport belt and a belt drive. Thanks for all your help
