Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Norcold DE0061, AC/DC frig, not gas absorption type. Compressor runs continually, as does fan. Coils are clean. Unit does not cool, gets frig compartment only down to 64 deg. F.

Worked ok this summer. Has great ventilation, over 4" to ceiling above front top grille. Good bottom side ventilation in addition to standard front bottom grille. How do I check for refrigerant leak?

With a miniscule leak, it is not easy to detect with liquid type detector, a halogen leak detector may or may not detect it.
What after a leak is detected, it needs to be patched, soldered, but refrigerant would need to be removed first.
You may install a tap on service port, it clamps on the line and no soldering required.
With normal operation, the top 2/3 of the condenser coil is hotter than the bottom 1/3 of the coil.

is it frozen up? do you have any air flow thru the air tunnel from the freeze to the fridge? Check your air flow with the door switch pushed in. also check to see if the damper door opens... 1) if it is iced up you have a defrost problem. most likely a defrost timer. Turn off or unplug untill all the ice has melted off the evaporator back of the freezer..plug back in and it will work fine untill the ice builds up again. if this work you do have a defrost problem.. if not let me know and we can go deeper...

SOURCE: Fridge not cooling

Hi,

Your description is quite complete but is rather baffling. Pls bear with me while we process by elimination. A few basic/working ideas:

  • most designs call for a single compressor to cool the freezer;
  • the cold air in the freezer is drawn towards the fridge to cool that area;
  • this is performed by a fan drawing air in the freezer through the evaporator;
  • most would have a vent or air pathway to guide the freezer air;
  • all would have thermostatic control to set the desired temperature;
  • some designs have two thermostatic control , 1 for the freezer, 1 for the fridge.
As applied to your concern:
  • compressor is working since freezer is OK;
  • fan is working as you posted but is the air drawn from the freezer, better still, is the air forced/vented into the fridge?
  • could you please check that the air is strongly blown into the fridge area;
  • a little experiment, open the fridge door, look for and press on the door switch, the light should go out, after a lengthy seconds, the fan should trigger on, not only would it be audible, you would notice the frozen air swirling inside the fridge area. If you hold on long enough to the dorr switch, the compressor should kick in (if it is not already running) since the thermostat of the fridge area (if one is present) would sense that the fan is turning but the fridge area is not cooling.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Check the damper in the top back of the fresh food section. make sure that it is open and air is coming through it.

If the compressor's running and it's getting hot and the coil isn't getting cold, then you are probably low on refrigerant or your txv or metering device isn't working.

No power to refrigerator unless it is hooked up direct. Think it is 12 volt dc supply connection. Could this be the problem only able to get partial # on part c1c 5122 is all we can read.

there is an inverter built in to the power supply that converts dc to ac to run the compressor if the fuse is ok. you will have to replace the supply . or for traveling you could hook up a small inverter to opperate the fridge while traveling this could be connected to the 12 vlt line for fridge power as it will not take much more power than the the fridge needs.

I have a Norcold 323 Refrigerator in a camper that will not cool when operating on AC but does work on gas, ( I cant test the DC as I dont have a 12 volt power sorce). After running in on gas for a while...

the unit runs on gas(LPG) so the unit is operational
by ac I take it you mean mains power and by dc you mean 12 volts it being a 3 way cooler
you cannot "jump start" a gas system so I am a bit lost with that statement
check the heating element in the unit for continuity as both the mains and 12 volt power only heat and element that boils of the coolant liquid in the system the same as the lpg flame does
it could be a relay problem for the electrical part

DE0061 draws power when not cooling

Hi captstu,

I'm Harvey th Master Plumber.

Your question is: Can you install an auxiliary thermostat on the DC power feed to stop the power draw when cooling is not required?

I understand your frustration. I live on a boat. Since the fridge thermostat is reducing the amp draw when the compressor is off, just remember to turn off the curcuit when you leave the boat and emptying the fridge. You are probly doing this already. Since any modification to a new unit voids the warranty I wouldn't go down that path. The unit should have been tested before installation. Water under the bridge. I agree with the manufacturer. I would tear it out and get a warranty replacement. Sorry, Norcold is right, this is the least painfull way out. It is beter than the cost of repair.
