you will get a bit of flow back when first turn on pump after service.
If you are not - use pool filter socks in your skimmer box (pool - not - pump skimmer). This will help lengthen the service times on your DE filter. Very helpful when 'Vacing' the pool :)

That's common, it happens for about 30 seconds when you first turn the filter on. If it is happening more than that then their may be a small tear in the nylon of your fingers or a bolt and nut loose on the tubesheets.

You will need to take the filter apart and check the grids, the manifold and the internal air bleed. If you have'nt done this in more than a year that can cause your grids to go bad. Or if your pool has gone green and you ran it before killing all the alge this will hurt your grids also. After you get it apart check the grids for holes or tears and see if the frames inside the grids are broken in any way. Check the air bleed the same way, and see if their are any cracks in the manifold. If any of these things are a problem they will need to be replaced. If alge is a problem you need to kill it before you can clean it out of the pool. Do this by super chlorination. And be sure to break down your filter and hand clean it at least once a year. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: Navigator Pool Cleaner: My Hayward pool cleaner just goes in small circles...
Check all of the following. Ones of these issues is probably causing your pool cleaner to go in circles. Let me know if these soultions don't work and I will be glad to offer more solutions, but I a think one of these might solve your problem:
1. You might not have proper water flow. Too much or too little pressure will cause this to happen. Check the pressure with your flow gauge and adjust if necessary.
2. Check for a partial blockage of the navigator throat. If you have a blockage, it could disrupt the movement of your cleaner. Clear blockage if necessary.
3. Check the shoes and wings. Damage or wear to them can disrupt your patterns of cleaning. If you notice that your shoes or wings are worn, replace them to correct the problem.
4. Check to make sure that your hose is not twisted. It should be clear of kinks, twists, and knots. Untangle if necessary. Laying the hose out in the sun will make it more pliable and easier to untangle if you need to do this.
5. Other things that could cause steering issues: check and clean the rear screen, check to see that the cone gear is is free and rotates smoothly, clean/replace/repair gear box, check pod connection, and check turbine and spindle assembly.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you need clarification or additional help!

Broken/torn grid, o-ring bad in the housing by the grid assembly or grids not in manifold properly. Backwash, open the filter, remove and inspect the grids (the plastic bases too).
