ON my Ricoh SP 420DN, my yellow cartridge broke, sending yellow toner free. I removed the cartridge, since it was leaking badly and the printer shut down and sent a goof message ("waste toner bottle full". I had to remove the cartridge, but how to start printing again with just black?

According to the maintenance manual, broken lines are caused by the "dithering" setting. Also there is an in depth color calibration process you can execute. Have you checked the PCU unit?
Here is the maintenance manual:

SOURCE: excess toner after ?overfilling cartridge w/ bulk toner
Did you refill the toner yourself or put a new one in or.......
SOURCE: Ricoh Aficio SP C410DN "set toner cartridge correctly"
It sounds like the part the toner bottle slides under to lock in place is broken. you could try and fold some paper and tape it to the toner to hold it down.
SOURCE: lanier LW324 waste toner bottle full
Open the machine and to the right under the drum you should see the the black powder (toner) going down into container the right lower side cover must come off. probably a service call will be needed
SOURCE: dell 926 will not print black and gives alignment error
Has this printer been sitting for a period of time? Inkjet nozzles will dry up...replace the cartidge, even tho it may be half full, it prolly has dried out
