On the KDFE55A20 this sounds like a bad Q-Box. I would get an estimate from a Sony authorized servicer as this part may be quite expensive. On the 55A10 model this may be the B-Block and is also quite expensive. Getting an on-sit estimate would be the first step I suggest. Again go with an authorized Sony servicer. Call Sony or go to Sony.com for customer service. Good Luck

you have a damaged screen. they generally go black when they have been cracked and the liquid crystal has leaked. the LCD can be replaced, but if it also has a tired battery, it is probably not worth repair. If you want to replace the display,you need the correct tool to remove the screws from the chassis internally, and the new LCD can be purchased from http://cellink.com.au/products/ They have the tools and parts to repair just about any phone. Try moving a medium powered magnet (not one for picking up heavy objects and not a refrigerator holding one) over the distorted area. If that doesn't work, try a more powerful one. This worked for my Toshiba LCD. Good luck!

Sounds like burn-in. Yep, LCD TVs can have it too. If you look close, I would bet you will the channels that has the bars down each side line up pretty good with that shadowy line. I have spoken with Samsung about this issue in the past, they will not cover it.
