I'm suspecting I need some kind of driver?

Here is the manual if you don't have one:http://www.tascam.com/details;9,21,23,19.html Make sure your guitar cord is working. Make sure your are plugged into the Guitar/Mike input jack.Do not connect a guitar amp to this jack via line out on the amp or otherwise. Set the Guitar/Mike switch to Guitar. Use the Input control to adjust the level of the input.Adjust your Headphone level using the Output control.Carefully read pages 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the manual. There are various combinations of controls that would make your guitar too quiet to be heard. Example: Mix Balance page 24. Let me know if this helps.
SOURCE: how do you load songs on the tascam MP-GT1
Connect the unit to your computer with the USB. It will show up as an external hard drive. Click on the unit from the menu and you will see 3 folders on the menu. Drag any mp3 music file from your computer to the "Music" folder on the unit. The problem you may run into however is that itunes music are copy righted and many songs on your computer may be mp4. You may need to rip directely from the cd's onto the computer, or even burn to a disc and then rip them back.

I had the same problem. After trying to turn it on many many times over weeks, I gave up. A few months later I tried it again, and same "Device Error" only. Then I decided to just mess around with it. So I held the power button on with my thumbnail while I pushed all the other buttons. I held in the MENU button for at least five seconds. Held in the ENTER button at least 5 seconds.... multiple buttons. These didn't seem to work, I don't think. but then decided to turn on the power button using the edge of my desk while several fingers pushed multiple other buttons.
To my great shock, all of a sudden, the bloody thing turned on like it's supposed to, logged into a Sugar Ray song I was learning awhile back, apparently. Go figure. After that, it turned on correctly twice so far.
So, heheh, I have no idea what the cure was. Just screw around with holding in multiple buttons while the power is on, I guess.
