How is the USB stick formatted? IF it is formatted NTFS or Apple, it won't be recognized, and of course the data on the stick has to be a media file format that your TV recognizes

I'm sure you probably have done this but i gotta ask!
When using usb there's enough power to run the usb key. When using 2.5inch hard drive the usb has enough power to run it. When using a 500gig you will need a separate powersource for it so check to make sure thats the case.
Also, a lot of these dvds will will only work with ide external harddrives and not sata external ones so make sure you use ide drives only.
good luck
smeags.

Pull up my computer and see if it shows up. If it does but does not show your files, you may be able to use a file recovery program to recover them. See end of this post.
2nd thing to try
Plug it into another computer just in case you ended up with a dinged driver on yours.
3rd
Your Cruzer may be toast but you may be able to recover your files if your SD memory you referred to has not been used since you deleted the original files. There are many computer apps out there just for doing that. Some are even free. This is just one example: http://www.pctools.com/file-recover/?ref=google_fr&gclid=CLCjzs-sl5wCFQNbxwodtkmudw
